Champion Hurdle fourth Alexei to pave the Grade 1 two-mile path for the Brits

Joe Tizzard has suggested his Champion Hurdle fourth Alexei has what it takes to remain at the top level next season. The son of Tai Chi has rapidly progressed this season, running a career best when fourth in the Champion Hurdle. He may have got closer had he not lost vital momentum at the last, beaten an eventual nine lengths.

An official rise of 10lbs to a mark of 158 means handicaps are a thing of the past, suggested Tizzard. Two-mile Grade 1’s look the way forward, but not before he steps up in trip at Aintree. Speaking to the Racing Post, Tizzard said: “He’s going to go to Aintree to run over two and a half.

“The only other option for him, especially after going up 10lb, was to go to Punchestown. Garth and Anne [owners] weren’t up for that. We’ll give it a go and find something out if nothing else.

“It’s a flat track. He’s a great traveller, so we can hold on to him as long as we need to. If he doesn’t stay we’ll know for next season.”

Brocade keen to avoid Sober Glory clash

Brocade racing are blessed with two mile talent, as Sober Glory posted a gallant second in the Supreme Novices’. As a point-to-point winner, there’s every chance Sober Glory could go chasing next season. The Hobbs & White trained-gelding is reportedly set to stay at two-miles for Aintree.

Tizzard continued, suggesting: “We wouldn’t want to clash with Sober Glory and from the conversations I’ve had I think we’ll stay over hurdles. He could have a Flat run as a prep for the Fighting Fifth. T

The Champion Hurdle picture looks set to be different once more this season. Lossiemouth is the obvious contender, and a rejuvenated State Man could also be a threat. Outside of that, Alexei would likely be taking on those stepping out from Novice company last season.

His last flight mishap perhaps undervalued what was a strong performance, as Tizzard said: “If he’d jumped the last he could have been nearly second anyway. He’d have been right in that little tussle. It’s exciting, and it gives him a chance. He’s got loads of speed.

“He’s possibly going to be the best two-mile hurdler in Britain which means there are loads of options to make hay before we get to Cheltenham. You’ve got Newcastle, Kempton and the Kingwell again, so that’s what we’ll probably do.”
