2.30 Ascot – COTAI VISION (0.5pt E/W – 125/1 generally)

Ed Walker has a good record with second-time out two-year-olds who were beaten but got within five lengths of the winner on their debuts. He’s won with 15 of the 44 qualifiers (34.1% strike-rate) for a profit of £15.89 to a £1 level stake at SP, with 17 of the beaten horses also making the frame. COTAI VISION was beaten by two and a half lengths into fourth when 14-1 for a ten-runner fillies’ contest at Lingfield on June 3rd, doing well to finish so close after running green. She’s going to have to improve massively but her dam won at the second time of asking, in-form Hollie Doyle has been booked to ride and her high draw could prove advantageous. I’ve saved on FLORA OF BERMUDA.

3.05 Ascot – BELHAVEN (1pt E/W – 20/1 BetUK + Bet365, 18/1 generally)

The straight-mile fillies’ handicap won by Farhh To Shy at Ascot on May 13th was run to suit those who came from off the pace, with the winner (‘midfield on far side of group’), third (‘towards rear’) and fourth (‘slowly away, in rear’) all ridden patiently. The exception was neck runner-up BELHAVEN, who was prominent throughout and raced keenly without cover. Aside from seasonal debuts, her record in handicap company now reads 1195112 (4-7), with the fifth place excusable as she failed to stay 1m2f at Newmarket. The switch to the round mile won’t inconvenience her and, hopefully, she’ll be ridden with a little more restraint this time. I’ve saved on DIVINE LIGHT.

3.40 Ascot – JUMBLY (2pt win – 9/4 generally)

It was typically difficult to come from off the pace over the longer trips (1m+) at the Curragh on Irish 1,000 Guineas Day, with those first past the post described by the Racing Post as ‘made all’, ‘made virtually all’, ‘prominent against far rail’, ‘raced in second, led 3f out’, ‘made virtually all’ and ‘in touch with leaders’. JUMBLY raced keenly in midfield before keeping on into second place behind JUST BEAUTIFUL in the Group 2 Lenwades Stud Stakes and did really well to finish just over two lengths back. That was the four-year-old’s first run for Joseph O’Brien, and she won here last summer on her final run for the Charlton yard.

5.00 Ascot – SONNY LISTON (1pt win – 20/1 Paddy Power + Betfair, 16/1 generally)

SONNY LISTON was very weak in the betting on last month’s debut for Ralph Beckett and ran accordingly, weakening into an 18-1 ninth of 12 at Newbury on his first start since gelded. That run was no doubt needed and he looks very interesting in the first-time blinkers with Ryan Moore booked. Since the beginning of 2016, Beckett is 29 from 137 (21.2%) strike-rate) when using first-time blinkers and backing them blind would have returned a huge profit of £101.10 to a £1 level stake at SP. In the same period, he also has a fine record at the second time of asking with horses he takes over from other trainers, scoring with 11 of the 47 qualifiers for a profit of £25.53. The geldings were seven from 22 (+£34.16), with the only one to wear first-time blinkers scoring at Chester. Sonny Liston has drawn a blank since scoring over 7f at Sandown for Charles Hills on his racecourse debut but has often been highly tried – he finished down the field in last year’s Derby for example – and a strongly-run mile could be ideal for him.
