Saturday’s racing sees six racecourses host cards across the UK and Ireland, with Ascot and Newmarket live on ITV. The Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes is the feature contest at HQ, but there is high quality racing across the country.
Andrew Mount does focus some of his analysis on Saturday at Ascot, but he also heads to Gowran Park and Redcar to follow two runners.
1.50 Ascot – King Of Light
King Of Light often meets traffic trouble (he can also be slowly away) and has form figures in fields of 12 or more runners of 7748027905078605 (0-16). In smaller line-ups his record reads 331114211 (5-9), including a three from three haul at Haydock where he repeated last year’s victory in a 5f Class 2 handicap last week (ten ran). I messaged his owner Tom Morely after the race who suggested that he won despite, not because of, the heavy ground and he expects him to be a better horse on better ground. He’s up in class to Listed level today but has quick ground and a smallish field and looks worth a punt at a big price.
3.40 Gowran Park – Shadow Paddy
Shadow Paddy clearly thrives on a sound surface in the warmer months and was taking his record in the May to October period to 5110411111 (7-10) when justify 5-2 favouritism in a Grade 3 novices’ chase at the Galway Festival on July 30th. Backing him blind under these conditions returned a profit of £21.63 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£28.57 at Betfair SP after 2% commission, expected wins = 2.19, A/E = 3.19). Eoin McCarthy’s gets his preferred conditions once again in this Grade 3 contest and looks good value to concede the weight to his rivals.
4.35 Redcar – Law Of Design
Recent form has been a good pointer to success in Redcar’s Straight-Mile Final and those runners who finished sixth or worse in their prep race were 0-51 in the ten renewals since 2015 (no running in COVID-affected 2020). Younger horses have also dominated, and my favoured angle is to side with the three and four-year-olds who finished in the top five last time out. This angle found nine of the ten winners in the study period and backing the 41 qualifiers blind returned a profit of £26.83 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£53.46 at Betfair SP after 2% commission, expected wins = 4.13, A/E = 2.18). The blank year came in 2019 when the three qualifiers finished third (100-30), fourth (14-1) and seventh (20-1). This year’s four qualifiers are Nyman, who did well from a poor draw in the Leger Legends race, Harswell Ruby, Wild Dahlia and Law Of Design. Preference is for the last-named who was poorly drawn when third of 13 over course and distance last time, “winning” the race on his side of the track by four lengths. Ian Williams’ four-year-old is better berthed in stall 5 of 14 today, assuming that the usual far-side bias is in play.
