Five tracks go racing in Britain and Ireland on Thursday, with jumps action at Ffos Las, Carlisle and Clonmel alongside the flat at Newmarket before Southwell takes over under the lights. Andrew Mount bagged a winner on Wednesday and he has a trio of picks for the action at Carlisle today.
3.02 Carlisle – Rickety Gate (0.5pt e/w – 17/2 generally with the firms paying four places)
Rickety Gate’s latest win came in April 2025, but his other four victories were achieved in the autumn, three of them in October and the other on November 2nd. Nicky Richards’ veteran bounced back from comprehensive defeats to win at the first time of asking in the 2023/23 and 2024/25 seasons and, last term, finished a respectable 17-2 third of 15 in this very race when advised each-way in this column, making his challenge on the inside when it helped to be wide of the rail. He’s 8lb lower this time around and again makes each-way appeal.
4.12 Carlisle – Wilful (1pt win – 11/4 generally) & Rubaud (0.5pt e/w – 5-1 generally)
With former Champion Hurdler Golden Ace, currently trading as the 7-4 favourite, a prime candidate to need the run I’m happy to play a couple of runners against her in this Listed hurdle. The main play has to be Wilful, who prefers galloping tracks. When racing on tracks 1.3miles or more in circumference his record reads 122114123113 (6-12) for a profit of £32.17 at SP. The O’Neill yard’s seven-year-old signed off last term with a fine 16-1 third to Lossiemouth in Grade 1 company at the Punchestown festival and deserves to be favourite today.
Rubaud is also worth a bet and at 5-1 looks ideal each-way material in this eight-runner line-up. Paul Nicholls’ eight-year-old tends to thrive at this time of year and has form figures in the October-November period of 1111111 (7-7).
