Andrew Mount’s Daily Racing Preview – Haydock Racing Analysis for Friday 16 October

Haydock, Uttoxeter, Redcar and Newcastle race in Britain on Friday, with Fakenham’s card already abandoned. Andrew Mount has three horses to watch at Haydock, taking a pair of runners out of one race at double figure prices, with a 9/1 selection elsewhere.

4.37 Haydock – Marching Mac (0.5pt e/w – 14/1 generally) & Al Hussar (0.5pt e/w – 20/1 generally)

Marching Mac, zero from ten on the all-weather, has an eight from 27 record on turf and tends to come good at this time of year. Phil McEntree’s five-year-old has form figures on grass in the September to November period of 124111152801125 (7-15), including figures in October only of 24111112 (5-8). The drop to Class 3 level will suit after his course and distance fifth in Class 2 company early last month and while the near six-week break is of some concern, as is the presence of fellow pacesetter Secret Mistral, he’s till worth a small interest.

If they do go too hard up front then the hold-up horse to benefit could be Grant Tuer’s Al Hussar. The four-year-old fared second best of those to race down the centre of the track (far side favoured) when a 16-1 seventh f 14 at Redcar last time and he’s a typical spring/autumn gelding, winning only in May or late September/October. His record in these three months stands at five wins from 17 starts for a profit of £36.50 at SP.

5.07 Haydock – Harry’s Halo (0.5pt e/w – 9/1 generally)

Harry’s Halo is another autumn performer, whose Leicester win last month took his record in sprint (5f-6f) handicaps in the September-October period to 159133121 (4-9) for a profit of £16.75 at SP. There is a slight suspicion that he could have been flattered by his favourable low draw last time but his autumn sprint handicap record in today’s Class 5 level reads 1311 (3-4) and he’s worth a small bet at a bigger than expected price.
