Andrew Mount’s Daily Racing Preview – Huntingdon & Southwell Racing Analysis for Tuesday 6 October

Five tracks go racing in Britain and Ireland on Tuesday, with jumps action at Huntingdon and Galway alongside the flat at Leicester and Brighton before Southwell takes over under the lights. Andrew Mount has horses to watch at both Huntingdon and Southwell, as he looks to follow up a winner on Monday.

4.16 Huntingdon – Mavis Pike (1pt win – 4/1 bet365, 7/2 generally)

Jumping has been an issue for all four runners in this 2m4f handicap chase but one of them has to win and that could be the Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies-trained Mavis Pike. The seven-year-old mare will appreciate the small field and her latest mishap (unseated rider_ – at the first fence at Warwick last November – was on account of being hampered rather than an actual jumping error. She’s been freshened up since and October is usually a good time to side with the yard’s runners, with 292 winners from 1398 bets since 2004 (20.9% strike-rate) for a profit of £103.06 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£355.30 at Betfair SP after 2% commission, expected wins = 246.30, A/E = 1.19).

The strike-rate improves to 23.2% for chasers or hurdlers who were returning from a break of at least 150 days and the daughter of Pether’s Moon fits the bill. She’s yet to win away from left-handed Fakenham but has form on right-handed tracks and her yard is flying, with seven winners from 12 runners in the last fortnight.

8.30 Southwell – He’s Our Cracker (1pt win – 11/4 generally)

It’s not easy to win from stalls 1 or 2 in handicaps of seven or more runners on the round course on Newcastle’s all-weather track but the Jennie Candlish-trained He’s Our Cracker overcame stall 1 of 9 to win there four days ago. Following horses who were poorly drawn in 1m2f+ handicaps of seven or more runners at that venue has been a profitable angle, with those who won or who were beaten but finished within 15 lengths of the winner have a 144 from 1058 record (13.6% strike-rate) for a profit of £147.44 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£504.32 at Betfair SP after 2% commission, expected wins = 118.36, A/E = 1.22).

His trainer had a 20-1 winner from her sole qualifier on this angle, and she has a great record with last-time out winners, regardless of where that victory came. The four-year-old is better drawn (stall 5 of 9) than main market rival Revelio (stall 1) and, having also earned a sectional timing upgrade for his Newcastle win, he can follow up.
