Five tracks go racing in Britain and Ireland on Tuesday, with jumps action at Punchestown, Hereford and Southwell alongside the flat at Leicester before Wolverhampton takes over under the lights. Andrew Mount has horses to watch at both Leicester and Wolverhampton, taking a pair of runners out of two races, which includes a 2pt win selection at the former.
4.14 Leicester – Law Of Design (2pt win – 9/2 bet365)
They went hard up front in the Straight-Mile Series Final at Redcar on October 3rd, with my each-way pick for this column Law Of Design (fifth), Barley (sixth), Mount King (ninth), Double Parked (12th) and Theoryofeverything (13th) all putting pace to the race. The resultant pace collapse saw the finish fought out by the duo who challenged widest of all from off the pace – Nyman (“towards rear”) and Classic Encounter (“midfield”). The third and fourth also came from midfield or further back and the prominent racers, especially the Ian Williams-trained Law Of Design, were worth upgrading. Mount King went close at Pontefract on his next start and Double Parked ran a blinder at York the other day, doing best of the prominent racers in a 12-1 fifth of 19. Law Of Design was well clear of that pair, and he gets the chance to show how good a run it was when he drops from Class 2 to Class 5 level for this 1m handicap. His wins to runs ratio (one from 19) is the obvious downside but he’s not had many goes over this trip on turf for his current yard and he was unlucky not to win a Class 5 handicap at Redcar on his penultimate start, doing best of the near side bunch in third of 13.
8.00 Wolverhampton – Palliser (1pt win – 9/2 bet365)
Since the beginning of 2021, Archie Watson’s record with handicap debutants on the all-weather, aged two or three, stands at 25 winners from 113 runners (221% strike-rate) for a huge profit of £85.99 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£143.02 at Betfair SP after 2% commission, expected wins = 14.36, A/E = 1.74). The geldings fared particularly well and it’s interesting to see Oisin Murphy booked for Palliser ahead of his handicap debut in this 8.6f nursery. The son of Kingman looks nicely drawn in stall 6 of 13 and his 100-1 forth to the now-91-rated Kaindy at Kempton on his second career starts suggests that there are races in him, especially now stepped up in trip from 7f.
