Newmarket, Uttoxeter, Wetherby and Newcastle race in Britain on Friday, with the rescheduled Group 3 St Simon Stakes the feature on the Rowley Mile and the Listed Wensleydale Juvenile Hurdle at Wetherby before Newcastle takes over under the lights.
Andrew Mount has horses to watch either side of the feature at Newmarket for our Friday best bets.
1.45 Newmarket – Sydney Grace (0.5pt e/w – 40/1 bet365)
Sydney Grace is a big price for the “Bosra Sham” but she looks potentially well drawn in stall 12 if they7 come across to the stands’ side (the stalls are in the centre) and she has run better than her finishing position suggests the last twice, doing best of the closers when fourth and Ayr and again when fifth at Kempton. There should be a good pace on in this 13-runner line-up, and she can sneak into the frame. Bet365 are 40-1 but pay only three places and if one of the four place firms (e.g. Hills, Sky Bet) go 33-1 then I’d rather take the shorter price.
2.55 Newmarket – Phone Tag (1pt win – 16/1 generally)
I went for Phone Tag in the Racing Post Naps table when he won the 1m1f handicap at this meeting last year and he looks worth a punt in this 1m Class 5 handicap. The five-year-old finished an eyecatching 66-1 sixth of 13 (beaten by three lengths) at Pontefract earlier this month on his return from a 142-day break and his turf record in spring/autumn, after a recent outing (within 31 days), stands at 1611 (3-4) for a profit of £29.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. The sole defeat and be excused as he looks unsuited to first-time cheekpieces. On paper, he’s not certain to encounter a strong gallop but there are plenty of runners and he is an attractive price. Barley is in my tracker after doing too much too soon when a 40-1 sixth of 14 in the straight-mile final at Redcar last time but prefers smaller fields and I’ll just have a stake saver.
