Seven tracks go racing in Britain and Ireland on a busy Monday before the jumps season starts in earnest later this week. Andrew Mount has horses to watch at both Pontefract and Kempton, taking a pair of runners out of two respective races.
2.40 Pontefract – Fiscal Policy & Mister Sox
The Ruth Carr-trained Fiscal Policy has a good record at Pontefract, recording form figures of 11314 (3-5), improving to 111 (3-3) at today’s Class 5 level. Both defeats came behind stablemate The Good Biscuit when arguably doing too much too soon and helping to set things up for that rival. The seven-year-old is well drawn in stall 1 of 14 and should be able to travel well on the inside rail and track likely pace angle Veydari (stall 8), who set it up for Fiscal Policy when the pair finished one-two over course and distance in June. Mister Sox is drawn out wide in stall 10 but he usually runs his race in sprint handicaps away from York and he drops to Class 5 level for the first time since his Catterick win in April 2025. I’ve had a saver on Tim Easterby’s six-year-old.
6.45 Kempton – Buccabay & Fifty Nifty
High-drawn prominent racers enjoyed a big advantage in the 6f Newmarket handicap won buy Northcliff, with the first three home drawn 9, 7 and 8 of nine and described by the Racing Post as “raced near side, prominent, led over 3f out”, “switched left soon after start, raced near side, prominent” and “switched left soon after start, raced near side, prominent”. Fifth-placed Nostrum who emerged second best of those to race down the centre has finished second and first in his two subsequent runs and Buccabay, who tracked that rival before fading into seventh place, could bounce back here. Eve Johnson’s Houghton’s six-year-old has a superior record on turf but Kempton figures of 324123 (1-6) suggest each-way claims. Fifty Nifty, a place behind Buccabay in that Newmarket race, challenged widest of all under a hold-up ride and it’s safe to ignore that effort. Stall 10 makes life difficult this evening but his earlier best-of-the-closers 12-1 second of 13 at Ascot was a fine effort and he’s also worth a small bet.
