Andrew Mount’s Daily Racing Preview – Pontefract & Southwell Racing Analysis for Monday 19 October

Pontefract, Plumpton, Bath, Wolverhampton and Southwell all race in Britain on Monday. Andrew Mount has horses to watch at both Pontefract and Southwell, taking a pair of runners out of two races.

4.25 Pontefract – Per Conrtra (1pt win – 5/1 generally)

Per Contra has a very useful record in Class 4 or lower company, recording form figures of 1135118 (4-7), improving to 11118 (4-5) over a distance of 1m2f or shorter. Tim Easterby’s five-year-old, just one from 26 above Class 4 level, disappointed at York last time where he finished a 10-1 eighth of 19 in a 0-85 Class 4 contest but this less competitive race offers him a good chance to bounce back. I’ve saved on Ohara, whose sole win came here on soft ground in the autumn.

7.30 Southwell – Ceinture D’Orion(0.5pt e/w – 14/1 bet365, 12/1 Hills, both four places) & Mayflower Billy (0.5pt e/w 25/1 bet365, 20/1 generally with the other firms paying first four)

The David O’Meara-trained Ceinture D’Orion is a seven-race maiden but she took a step forward when fourth over course and distance on her all-weather debut last time out and today’s first-time cheekpieces could help her to open her account. Her trainer has an 11 from 57 record (19.3% strike-rate) when using this headgear in all-weather handicaps for a profit of £37.92 at SP (+£47.29 at Betfair SP after 2% commission). No less than 23 of the 46 beaten horses finished second, third or fourth and she makes each-way appeal from what looks a useful draw in stall 9.

The other one who looks over-priced is Mayflower Billy, whose only other run in today’s Class 6 grade saw him finished a close 40-1 second of 14 over a round mile at Doncaster in May. His only run on Tapeta saw him finish a best-of-the-prominent racers third in a Class 5 course and distance handicap in late August and his two subsequent defeats can be blamed on the 1m2f trip.
