Andrew Mount’s Daily Racing Preview – York, Newmarket, Chepstow & Naas Racing Analysis for Saturday 10 October

The Dewhurst Stakes and the Cesarewitch headline a cracking Saturday at HQ, with York and Chepstow also on the ITV agenda. Andrew Mount has horses to watch at both Newmarket and York, as well as Chepstow and Naas to cover a lot of bases on Saturday.

3.17 York – Toyotomi

Toyotomi finished a close-up third when I made him an each-way bet in the Ayr Silver Cup last time, having caught the eye behind Coul Angel in the Bold Lad Premier Handicap at the Curragh the time before where he got no luck in running. He had also gone into the tracker after his earlier Goodwood sixth when doing second bets of the closers. This race usually goes to a runner draw in stall 8 or lower but with a strong crosswind from the far side in the straight I’m happy with stall 10 as he’ll be able to get cover and he looks a solid each-way play with the soft ground in his favour.

3.40 Newmarket – Mountain Road

I put up Mountain Road at York’s Ebor meeting in August where he ran a cracker to finish a best-of-the-closers 20-1 second behind Joseph O’Briens’s 2-1 favourite Small Fry. That form was boosted by the patiently-ridden seventh Valedictory won next time, and Jim Goldie’s veteran looks set to run a big race in the Cesarewitch with the unseasonably quick going in his favour. His patient running style is usually an asset in this race. I’ve saved on stablemate Letsbefrank, another likely to be on the premises late.

4.02 Chepstow – Moon Chime

Moon Chime bombed out in this race last year when I liked his chances, though was backed from 22-1 into 12-1 and was hampered by a faller before finishing ninth of 14. His connections blam3ed the ground – they said it was softer than the official ‘good’ verdict but that’s not backed up by the clock. It probably had more to do with jockey Kielan woods staying far side in the straight on the slowest part of the track and the subsequent addition of a tongue-tie for his next jumps start suggests that there may have been a breathing issue. The eight-year-old has won twice right-handed – at Kempton on the Flat and at Huntingdon hurdles win when odds-on – but is much better left-handed, recording form figures of 11311B13911 (7-11) for a profit of £47.19at SP. He’s two from two this way round since fitted with a tongue-tie and makes each-way appeal.

16:02 Wasdell Group Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle (Premier Handicap) (GBB Race)

4.08 Naas – Stag Night

Stag Night is happiest given a sprint trip (5f-6f) and Class 3or lower company – his record under such conditions stands at 11316151 (5-8) for a profit of £16.50 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£20.09 at Betfair SP after 2% commission). Willie McCreery’s veteran goes well in the autumn and enjoys plenty of cut in the ground, winning at this meeting twice previously, including this race in 2023. Stall 5 of 11 gives him options if one side of the track is strongly favoured over the other and he’s a stand-out on Proform’s speed figures when filtered for genuinely soft or heavy going. Keke goes well here – form figures of 3131 (2-4) – but he would have preferred quicker going.
