Andrew Mount's Horse Racing Tips - Cheltenham Festival Day 4, Friday, 13th March

It’s Cheltenham Gold Cup day on Friday 13th March and Andrew Mount not only has a brace of selections for the big race, but he has a whole host of other selections for day 4 of the Cheltenham Festival.

Check out Andrew’s Cheltenham Festival Day 4 tips below, which includes a 33/1 tip in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at 3.20pm.

Cheltenham Festival Day 4 Tips (Friday 13 March 2026)

Seven races kick off with the Triumph Hurdle at 1.20pm, but the Cheltenham Gold Cup is the highlight at 4pm. See who Andrew is backing across the action at Prestbury Park.

1.20 Cheltenham – North Shore (0.5pt e/w – 33/1 generally, William Hill paying ¼ 1,2,3,4 rather than 1/5)

Triumph Hurdle runners who finished in the top four in Grade 1 company last time out have a good recent record (six winners from 28 bets, with 14 of the beaten horses running second, third or fourth) and North Shore fits the bill after his fourth to Narciso Has – favourite for this race until injury intervened – at Leopardstown last month. Gavin Cromwell’s grey also saw the back end of Narciso Has when a 12-1 third in Grade 2 company on his hurdles/stable debut and looks a solid each-way play.

13:20 JCB Triumph Hurdle (Grade 1) (GBB Race)

3.20 Cheltenham – Road Exile (0.5pt e/w – 33/1 generally with the firms paying four places, Sly Bet 28/1 five places)

Runners who finished second, third or fourth in a Graded race last time out have over-performed in the Albert Bartlett, winning in six of the last ten years when represented, including the last three. Backing all 37 qualifiers in that time frame returned a profit of £123.00 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£239.54 at Betfair SP after 2% commission). This year’s qualifiers are Road Exile, Fruit De Mer, Kazansky, Kicour La and Ubatuba, with preference for the first-named.

Gordon Elliott’s point-to-point winner has yet to finish outside of the first three in his Rules career, going down by a nose in a 2m2f soft-ground bumper at Limerick before scoring over 2m on heavy ground at the same venue. 2m1f on yielding ground was an insufficient test at Down Royal on his hurdles debut where he finished third to Blake as the 6-5 favourite, but he took a big step forward at Navan next time, making all from 25 rivals. He was sent off as the odds-on favourite for a three-runner Grade 2 at Punchestown in January but was outpaced after setting steady fractions, finishing just over five lengths back in second place. This test will be more suitable and he looks good value.

15:20 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1) (Registered As The Spa Novices’ Hurdle) (GBB Race)

4.00 Cheltenham – Jango Baie (1pt win – 9/2 three places, 4/1 generally) & Grey Dawning (1pt win – 14/1 Paddy Power, Unibet, AK Bets)

I tipped Jango Baie for the Arkle last year, despite the trip being on the short side and, after dropping back and looking beat having helped to force a strong pace, he came through to win at 5-1 (touched 300 in running). Nicky Henderson’s seven-year-old finished outside of the first two for the first time in his career when a 1.25L third at Aintree next time where the 2m4f trip looked too short and returned this season with an impressive 9L verdict over Gidleigh Park at Ascot (2m5f) after a summer wind op. He’s only went down by 0.5L when fourth in the King George at Kempton after Nico De Boinville took the Adam Kondrat route round the wide outside. There should be plenty of improvement to come over the Gold Cup trip and, aside from the Arkle, his only other Cheltenham run saw him score by 6.5L over the extended 2m4f on the New Course.

Grey Dawning was my nap of the 2024 Festival where he won the now-defunct 2m4f Grade 1 novices’ chase and I had high hopes of him winning last year’s Gold Cup. However, a hard race in the Betfair Chase behind Royale Pagaille and a needlessly quick return to action in the King George (pulled up after hating the right-handed track) saw him miss knocked him off kilter and we only saw him at Kelso (won) and Aintree (second to Gaelic Warrior). Dan Skelton has done this differently this year, resting him after his reappearance Betfair Chase win before a 90% modest third in the Cotswold Chase on Trials Day when given too much to do. He’ll reportedly be ridden more handily this time (he may even make the running) and he’s the forgotten horse in the race.

16:00 Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase (Grade 1) (GBB Race)

5.20 Cheltenham – Andashan (0.5pt e/w – 16/1 generally)

Since learning to settle Andashan has looked to be crying out for a step up from two miles and he improved for the 2m3f trip when chasing home Kabral Du Mathan at Haydock in November. Chris Gordon’s six-year-old went one better over 2m4f at Newbury next time and the big field/strong pace will play to his strengths.

17:20 Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race)
