7.00 Wolverhampton – CAMPENAERTS (1pt win – 4/1 bet365)
Archie Watson has a good recent record on the all-weather with two and three-year-olds that were making their handicap debuts, scoring with 21 of the 97 qualifiers since the beginning of 2021 for a profit of £89.07 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 11.81, A/E = 1.78). Those who were having their first start since a gelding operation were eight from 20 in the same period (+£33.45, expected winners = 3.45, A/E = 2.32). CAMPENAERTS has shown early speed in his three starts to date – all on turf – and the son of Sergei Prokofiev is bred to handle Wolverhampton’s Tapeta surface, something that can’t be said for CAREFREE DREAM, whose sire’s juveniles are just one from 26 here.
8.30 Wolverhampton – POPEYE DOYLE (1pt win – 14/1 bet365)
POPEYE DOYLE was well beaten at Chester on last month’s reappearance, but he was drawn wide on his first start since a gelding operation and it’s easy to forgive. He was only a seven-length ninth of 12 when 14-1 at Ffos Las on his latest outing but the race was started by flag instead of stalls and a fast break was all important. The winner, runner-up and fourth were prominent throughout and it was very difficult to make ground from off the pace. Hugo Palmer’s three-year-old raced in midfield and didn’t look entirely happy on the soft ground, weakening from over one furlong out and perhaps still needing the run. He was neck in front of the patiently ridden 80-1 chance Nakaaha who came out to win at Newbury last Saturday (33-1). His yard’s Wolverhampton handicappers are profitable to back blind – 29 winners from 164 bets (17.7% strike-rate) for a profit of £73.78 to a £1 level stake at SP – and he’s worth chancing tonight.
