State Man is a red-hot favourite in the Punchestown Champion Hurdle Odds, as the Willie Mullins-trained superstar will look to follow up his fine win in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival by landing more glory on day four of the Punchestown Festival on Friday. We take a look at the latest betting for the Grade 1 event that only sees four horses line up…
A one-and-three-quarter length winner of the Champion Hurdle in March, State Man made the most of Constitution Hill’s absence by claiming glory and he’s a red-hot 1/3 favourite to claim Punchestown Champion Hurdle glory, a race he won 12 months ago. The seven-year-old got the better of Gordon Elliott’s Irish Point in the Champion Hurdle and the Cullentra House inmate appears to be State Man’s biggest threat and he’s around a 3/1 chance to land this prize.
The pair have shown to be the two premier hurdlers in the division this season and while Irish Point has shown he can deliver the goods over further he will be hoping to make inroads into the two-mile sphere as well and the duo dominate the betting and it’s hard to not see them battling out the finish on Friday evening.
The Willie Mullins team will be doubly represented here and while State Man will be the flagbearer for the Closutton team they will also unleash Sir Gerhard, who was only seen last week at Sandown competing in the Select Hurdle. Third in that event, the nine-year-old will look to improve on that effort, but he’s as big as 20/1 to cause a shock on his stablemate here.
Lorna Fowler’s Colonel Mustard completes the quartet and the nine-year-old is 50/1 to land this prize and he was a well beaten fifth in the Champion Hurdle. Winless since late 2021, Colonel Mustard has run creditably over the last few seasons without getting his head in front, but he’s yet again set to earn some decent prize money and he’s the likely outsider of the line-up.
