Saturday’s big race is the Sprint Cup Stakes at Haydock (3:30pm), as strong favourite, Starman looks to add another Group 1 victory to his already impressive record. The race has a attracted a ten runner field and we take a look at those likely to be in contention, along with one or two that could pose a surprise at the Lancashire venue
STARMAN
As mentioned, the favourite for the race is Starman, who returns to UK action for the first time, since following up the Duke Of York Stakes victory, with the win in the July Cup at Newmarket, when beating Dragon Symbol by 1.25 lengths.
An attempt to make it three successive group wins at Deauville, failed in the Prix Maurice de Gheest last month, which saw them 1.75 lengths adrift of winner, Marianafoot, in somewhat unfavorable conditions. Ed Walker’s charge is expected to bounce back in style here and will likely just be kept off the pace by jockey, Tom Marquand, before being let loose in the closing stages. The question is… Can he be stopped?

CREATIVE FORCE
There are arguably three contenders that could stop the expected victory of the favourite, with Creative Force the most likely. Charlie Appleby’s charge made it a four-timer when winning the Group 3 – Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot, ahead of Naval Crown, but has not quite been in the same form since.
He placed fifth behind Starman in the July Cup, before taking second in the Group 2 – Lennox Stakes at Goodwood. The return to 6f for this contest could well be a boon, but he will need a career best to reverse the defeat to his rival last time they met. Plenty of talent and well worth each-way backing

ART POWER
Behind those, Art Power placed fourth in this contest last year and tends to be a fast starter, with his early pace, having the potential to upset the race balance somewhat. His last win was in the Group 3 – Lacken Stakes at Naas back in July, but he has been competitive in Group outings since and could put a spanner in the works for Tim Easterby.

GLEN SHIEL
Glen Shiel is arguably the only other real threat to the favourite, with the Archie Watson’s runner placing second in this race last year, when a 25/1 shot, finishing 1.25 length behind Dream Of Dreams and finishing ahead of Art Power. He followed that up with a win in the Group 1 – British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot](https://gg.co.uk/racing/17-oct-2020/ascot-1355) last October, beating Brando by a nose. He has the talent, and certainly holds plenty of each-way interest for this contest

SUPREMACY
From the remaining six runners in the field, the stand out interest comes from Supremacy, who won the Group 2 – Richmond Stakes at Goodwood and the Group 1 – Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket last season.
Charlie Cox’s runner hasn’t quite lived up to that form, so far this year, which saw them fifteenth and some 7.75 lengths adrift of Starman in the July Cup. Despite that run, its difficult to ignore this obviously talented runner here and with a return from a couple of months break, he could step up and feature here and has the potential to finish in the place positions.

Can Starman be stopped from taking the spoils in the Sprint Stakes? It will take a monumental effort from these contenders, if the favourite is in top form. However, with early pace potentially coming from Art Power upsetting the balance of the race and always risky need to come through with a late run, it may not be quite so simple for Tom Marquand’s ride.
