Race 1 (1:15pm) BRAVEMANSGAME

This looks like a straightforward selection for this first race of the Placepot, with Paul Nicholls trained Bravemansgame the odds on favourite to take the spoils here. He comes in looking for a four-timer after the Boxing Day victory at Kempton (3m, good to soft) in the Kauto Star Novices Chase, when 7.5 lengths clear of Ahoy Senor. This could well be a bit more of a challenge, considering he is giving everyone else at least 16lbs, but he is really THAT good and is the opening salvo of our six.

Race 2 (1:50pm) WHATSUPWITHYOU

Only career win came back in December 2019, on debut at Ascot, with Ben Pauling’s runner picking up places in four races since. A third at Fontwell (2m 5f, soft) back in December over fences looked to show him returning to form, before a decent sixth of fourteen at Cheltenham on New Years Day. Looks a lot more fluent over flights and is expected to build upon that latest performance here.

Race 3 (2:25pm) ROYALE PAGAILLE

Venetia Williams’ runner sealed a hat-trick around this time last year, winning the Grade 2 – Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock (3m 1f, heavy), before a disappointing Gold Cup attempt. He returned to action last November, placing second to A Plus Tard in the Grade 1 – Betfair Chase at Haydock, before retaining the Peter Marsh Chase three weeks ago, when half a length clear of Sam Brown. Clan Des Obeaux may be the favourite here, but this 8-yo is in prime form and can usurp the market leader, or at least push them all the way.

Race 4 (3:00pm) SCEAU ROYAL

Sixteen wins form thirty-nine races so far, with the last of those coming back in November, when taking the Grade 2 – Elite Hurdle at Wincanton (1m 7f, good), 5.5 lengths clear of Teqany. Since then he has placed third in the Fighting Fifth, just 1.5 lengths adrift of the winner, followed by a more disappointing sixth (of seven) in the International Hurdle at Cheltenham in December. Expected to bounce back here, from that rare poor showing and is tipped to be right in the action once again.

Race 5 (3:35pm) BROOMFIELD BURG

After a relatively average debut run, Nicky Henderson’s runner has three wins and two places, including a victory last time out on Boxing Day, in a Class 2 – Novices Hurdle at Kempton Park, easing to a 10 length win, ahead of Black Poppy. Major player here and one of several major players in this contest.

Race 6 (4:10pm) KING OTTOKAR

Without a win in twelve races, since April 2019, but has produced the odd strong run on the flat since, including a third place at Newbury in a Class 2 Handicap, when 2.25 lengths adrift of Ascension. Makes the switch to hurdling here from Charlie Fellowes over to the Henderson Seven Barrows yard and with Nico De Boinville onboard, must surely have strong claims overall.
