SATURDAY

Aston Villa v Everton (12:30pm)

Aston Villa and Everton meet looking to kick start their seasons, after first day defeats. Steven Gerrard will the unhappier of the two managers, as he saw his Villa side lose 2-0 at Bournemouth despite dominating the game, while Frank Lampard’s Everton were unsurprisingly outplayed by Chelsea in terms of possession and shots, although it took a penalty in the 9th minute of injury time, from Jorginho to separate the sides in the end.

Aston Villa did the double over Everton last season, winning 3-0 and 1-0 respectively and even though the Toffees may feature new signing, Amadou Onana, they also have a few injury issues. Villa to improve and take three points.

Brentford v Manchester United (5:30pm)

Brentford take on Manchester United at the Brentford Community Stadium, with the visitors looking o bounce back from a shock 1-2 loss at home to Brighton last week, in Erik ten Hag’s first meaningful game in charge. United looked vulnerable, with Danny Welbeck pulling the backline all over the places, whilst going forward, it took the inevitable introduction or Cristiano Ronaldo to see any sort of potency going forward.

Brentford came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at the King Power, with Leicester City, as Ivan Toney and Jay DaSilva rescued a hard-fought point, much to Thomas Frank’s delight. Once the Bees scored their first, just after the hour mark, they once more looked the confident side of last season and that does not bode well for the Red Devils. If Manchester United start off slow and allow Brentford to hunt them down, as Brighton did, this could be another awkward evening for ten Hag and his team.

SUNDAY

Nottingham Forest v West Ham United (2:00pm)

Newly promoted Nottingham Forest welcome West Ham to the City Ground as Premier League football returns to the ground for the first time in 23 years. Forest had a a tough, with a 2-0 defeat at St James’s Park to Newcastle, managing to hold out until the hour mark. However a bigger concern was their last of shots, with none on target in the match.

West Ham lost 2-0 at home to the champions, Man City, as David Moyes’s side saw Erling Haaland’s talent at first hand. The Hammers did give City a scare of two, but arguably were a little too passive. This will be a more open contest than that game and I expect to see the likes of Antonio, Bowen and Lanzini come to the fore, as the Hammers take the points,

Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur (4:30pm)

The big match of the weekend is a London derby, as Chelsea take on Tottenham, as the Blues look to extend a four game winning run against the North London side. Despite the turmoil behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge, Thomas Tuchel has brought in new recruits, with notables including Koulibaly and Sterling, plus more to come. Jorginho’s penalty was enough to seal the points at Everton last week, but Tuchel was very aware that more is needed.

Antonio Conte’s Spurs have signed six new players and look to have a genuinely strong squad, with Perisic, Richarlison and Bissouma among the names coming in. Conte has instilled a strong belief in the side, which was seen in the 4-1 win over Southampton. They went 1-0 down and could easily have stuttered, but they maintaned their shape and got their rewards to win.

Chelsea have a strong record as mentioned over Spurs, especially at the Bridge and have not lost to Spurs here in the last six, however with Chelsea still not quite settled in terms of how they are set up, Spurs could well come away from West London with something in their hands.

MONDAY

Liverpool v Crystal Palace (8:00pm)

Liverpool host Crystal Palace in this Monday night fixture, with Jurgen Klopp’s side already playing catch-up to Manchester City, having been held to a 2-2 draw by Fulham at Craven Cottage. “Held” may be a little to generous, as Nunez and Salah goals were needed to peg back the newly promoted side.

Crystal Palace played in the opening match on the Friday night and were beaten by Arsenal 2-0 at Selhurst Park, with the Gunners playing some scintilating football in the first half especially. Patrick Vieira’s side were a little unfortunate, having had more possession and the same amount of shots, but the north Londoner’s quality shone through.

Liverpool have won the last twelve meetings against Palace, with an aggregate of 21-1 in the last six games between them. I only see a Liverpool win, with Liverpool and an over/under bet the way forward.
