Trifecta Of The Day
The big race of the day is the Group 1 – Gold Cup at 3:35pm and is the focus of our Trifecta selections this afternoon, with the first of those being Stradivarius who goes in as strong odds on favourite to make it three successive Gold Cup victories on the bounce.
John Gosden’s runner has won twelve of sixteen career races and was in fine form towards the end of last season, winning the Doncaster Cup in September, before narrowly failing behind Kew Garden by a nose, over 1m 7f here a month later. Their seasonal return saw them finish third in the Coronation Cup at Newmarket, behind Ghaiyyath and Anthony Van Dyck over a stiffer 1m 4f test, but the extra sharpness will no doubt help on the return to a more familiar distance. The one to beat.
Next up is Technician, who won three group races last season, including the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury and most recently, the Group 1 Prix Royal Oak at Longchamp in October. Stayed on well that day over the 1m 7f trip, which offers hope for today’s extended test. Most of his best form is on soft ground, so may need a little help from the weather, but should be there or thereabouts this afternoon.
The third and finally selection is Cross Counter who has won five and placed four times in a dozen career starts and winning the Melbourne Cup back in 2018. Has raced the favourite twice and finished just two lengths behind in the most recent of those at Goodwood on good ground. Enjoys Ascot and if he can return to form, after a couple of disappointments abroad, he could chase Stradivarius home once again.
