Race 1 (12:30pm) COUNT MERIBEL
Five wins in twenty-six starts for this Nigel Twiston-Davies runner, although form had been a little disappointing at the back end of last season, with a sixth and last at Newton Abbott (2m 4f, good) and forty lengths adrift of the winner. However, he has been given a very good mark by the handicapper for this rare excursion over hurdles and does also tend to run well fresh too. So, despite his obvious struggles, he should show a marked improvement.
Race 2 (1:00pm) O’CONNELL STREET
Solid performer over hurdles, who has made the transition to fences with little issue, having placed second on chasing debut at Perth (2m 7f, soft), back in July, before returning to the same venue in September and taking the spoils over 2m 4f, when easing to a 16 length win over Pat’s Pearl. He placed fifth in latest at Gowran park, but the performance was arguably better than the result and a further improvement is expected.
Race 3 (1:35pm) BOMBS AWAY
This Westerner gelding, out of Miss Greinton looked impressive on debut, when second at Southwell (1m 7f, good), 0.75 lengths adrift of I Hope Star back in May for a bumper contest. Olly Murphy’s charge came up against a very flat bred winner that day and with improvement likely on this hurdling debut, should be in the mix once more, for the spoils.
Race 4 (2:10pm) CHANTRY HOUSE
Seven wins in nine starts for Nicky Henderson’s runner, including the Marsh Novices Chase at the Festival and the Mildmay Chase at Aintree (3m good to soft). He takes on just one other in this contest, with The Big Breakaway at least expected to keep him on his toes in what should be a winning return to action.
Race 5 (2:45pm) ON TO VICTORY
Generally consistent type who has six wins and fourteen places in thirty-six starts, but has unusually struggled in recent outings, since a second at Goodwood (1m 3f, soft) in a listed flat contest. Has won twice over hurdles last season and with that extra fitness, should find themselves in contention once again, after the recent run of form, especially with a handy mark from the handicapper.
Race 6 (3:15pm) VIVAS
Charlie Longsdon’s runner has found it tough since a second at Warwick back in September of 2020, when 1.25 lengths behind Young Wolf. He failed to finish in five of the following six runs, before luck seemed to have turned in his latest trip, when second at Chepstow (2m 7f, good), missing out by 3 lengths to Some Chaos, who raced in listed company on Saturday. Has a 2lbs rise to contend with, but that confidence building run, may just be the turning point for this 10-yo.
