What is spread betting?

Spread betting is a type of wager where your winnings or losses are determined by how accurate your bet is.

Unlike a traditional sports bet where you are either right or wrong, in spread betting you bet on whether a certain statistic will be higher or lower than a predetermined range set by the spread betting firm.

Betting for a statistic to be more than that range is referred to as buying, while betting on it being lower is referred to as selling.

Winnings or losses are then calculated based on how far over or under the spread the total goes.

While it sounds confusing, things become a lot clearer with concrete examples, which can be found below.

Spread betting on football

Football is arguably the most popular sport for wagering spread bets due to the vast array of markets on offer and the ease of the calculations.

Spread betting sites offer all manner of markets, ranging from run-of-the-mill goals and supremacy statistics to more niche offerings such as shirt numbers, goal minutes, and corners.

For this we’ll stick to a simple example of what the outcome might be if you buy or sell in the total goals markets, using Chelsea’s upcoming match against Barcelona as the reference.

For this November tie, the total goals spread is set at 3.4 – 3.6 on Spreadex. If we decided to ‘buy’ goals at £10, here are the possible results:

Total goalsProfit/LossReason((Total goals – Buy odds) x Stake)
0-£36((0 – 3.6) x 10) = -36
1-£26((1 – 3.6) x 10) = -26
2-£16((2 – 3.6) x 10) = -16
3-£6((3 – 3.6) x 10 = -6
4+£4((4 – 3.6) x 10 = 4
5+£14((5 – 3.6) x 10 = 1.4

And if we were to ‘sell’ goals for the same match:

Total goalsProfit/LossReason((Sell odds – Total goals) x Stake)
0£34((3.4 – 0) x 10) = 34
1£24((3.4 – 1) x 10) = 24
2£14((3.4 – 2) x 10) = 14
3£4((3.4 – 3) x 10 = 4
4-£6((3.4 – 4) x 10 = -6
5-£16((3.4 – 5) x 10 = -1.6

Spread betting on horse racing

Horse racing is another hugely popular sport in spread betting circles, where punters can buy and sell across an ever increasing number of markets.

For example, you can place spread bets on winning distances, jockey performance, match bets between two horses, as well as some obscure markets such as double the number of the winning horse.

Winnings and losses are calculated in the same way as football.
