VALLEY FORGE – Northumberland Plate (3:30pm Newcastle)
One of the big races of the day comes from Newcastle, with the Northumberland Plate, featuring a twenty runner field. The likes of Rajinsky and Trueshan lead the market, but I’m plumping for Andrew Balding’s Valley Forge, who comes into this contest off the back of a third career win at Haydock (2m, good), in a Class 2 Handicap last month, when beating Golden Flame by a head.
This winner of the Melrose at York last year, makes a first appearance on Tapeta, but remains unexposed as a stayer in general and looks to have plenty more to come as he gains more experience and could well take the spoils here, ahead of the more well known, market leaders.

TUESDAY – Irish Derby (Curragh 3:45)
The Irish Derby also takes place on Saturday, with the Irish premier flat contest, taking place at Curragh. This looks to be a straight fight between Aiden O’Brien’s Tuesday and Ralph Beckett’s Westover, with these two clear in the market and its the former that I am going for here.
She won a fillies maiden at Naas in March and has since stepped up to perform well in Group 1 contests since, placing third in 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, before a third in the Irish equivalent here at Curragh last month. At the third time of asking, she took her first group victory, when winning the Oaks at Ascot (1m 4f, good), beating Emily Upjohn by a shorthead and becoming the first filly to do so since 1994. Strong claims here and I fancy her to sneak it.

SUNDAY
CASTLEFORD TIGERS vs Catalans Dragons (Rugby Superleague, 3:50pm)
In the Rugby Superleague on Sunday, Castleford Tigers host Catalans Dragons at the Jungle. Tigers have won three of their last six matches, but did end a two game losing run with a 20-14 victory over Toulouse, while the Dragons have four wins in their last six and bounced back from a loss to Hudderfield, with a 36-8 win over Hull FC.
The sides met in April, over in Perpignan, with the Dragons rattling off a 44-12 home win and taking the initiative by half-time, however on home soils the Tigers will fancy their chances and moreover will be up for avenging that heavy loss and I fancy them to cause a minor surprise here.

DJURGARDENS vs GIF Sundsvall (Allsvenskan, 4:30pm)
In the Allsvenskan, Sundsvall host Djurgardens, with the home side in need of points. Sundsvall have two wins and eight defeats in ten league games so far. Djurgardens are fourth in the league and have lost just twice in the last ten, with a win here keeping them in the title hunt.
Djurgardens are unbeaten in seven against Sundsvall with three draws in their, but they did win 4-1 here last time. Expect another strong win for Djurgardens, as Sundsvall sit desperately in the relegation zone.
