Anrold Lane caused a 25-1 upset at Chelmsford City on his belated British All-weather debut last month, landing a Class 2 handicap over the 7f trip. I laid him at Lingfield next time, as last-time-out Chelmsford winners have a poor record at the Surrey venue (scoring just four times from 34 starts for a level-stakes loss of £199.50 to a tenner) but the 10-1 shot gave me a proper brown-trouser moment when only caught close home.
He’s back at Chelmsford for the Bet Totetrifecta Conditions Stakes (3.50) and looks ridiculously over-priced at around the 16-1 mark, especially as he looks set to receive an easy time of things at the head of affairs. He’s now had 44 lifetime starts but it’s only just becoming apparent that he seems happiest granted 7f and a left-handed track. Since the start of the 2013 he’s only had four starts in Britain under these conditions on good to soft/faster turf or the All-weather, recording form figures of: 1112 (3-4), with the defeat by half-a-length.
Selection: Arnold Lane-Chelmsford 3.50 (2pts win, 16-1 generally)
