Big weekend for royal runners headlined by Portcullis on Friday

Royal Ascot begins just over one month from today. Few sights would be more welcome at the meeting than a victory for the famous royal silks.

A number of potential participants for HM The King & HM The Queen race this weekend. Warrant Holder and Queen’s Companion run at York and Newmarket respectively on Friday. Golden Orbit, meanwhile, could turn out to be an Epsom Oaks contender after she races at Newbury on Saturday.

Despite those heady ambition for Ralph Beckett’s filly, it is Portcullis who will receive the majority of royal attention. Trained by John & Thady Gosden, he belied significant early greenness to storm clear in the Wood Ditton Maiden at Newmarket. That race is often a pointer towards a useful star of the future. Portcullis definitely looks one of those.

That five-and-a-half length success augured well for what comes next. He races in the finale at York on Friday, with William Buick in the saddle. It is only a “confined” novice event he runs in, but the St James’s Palace entry could spark great interest for his potential Ascot participation.

“He’s strengthened and developed” – John Gosden

Although trading at narrowly odds-on for York’s final race of the Dante meeting, Portcullis faces some serious rivals. Both Weheedd and Ervani were second on their debuts for powerful yards. As they have not won, whereas Portcullis has, they will receive 6lb from the royal runner.

John Gosden, speaking to Racing TV, is happy with the progress his colt has made. He understands the quality of the field, but knows Portcullis has trained on well since his green debut.

“He’s coming here on Friday and has trained well since the Wood Ditton. He’s strengthened and developed, he’s still a young horse who is a little inclined to get in a hurry about things, but we’re happy with him.

“I see a nice field (in Portcullis’ York race). William has put in a very nice colt that was second to a horse of our (Organise) at Yarmouth. He looked smart that day, so it will be no penalty kick.”

Portcullis is a general 25/1 chance for the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. The opening day Group 1 is likely to be one of the races of the meeting given potential runners. 2000 Guineas hero Bow Echo is unbeaten and heads to Berkshire next. Gstaad and Puerto Rico have also been confirmed as likely runners by Aidan O’Brien.

W: 9st 11lb
Age: 4 yo Filly
Ninth foal; sister to French 1,000 Guineas/French Oaks winner Avenir Certain, half-sister to two winners; dam Group-placed 7f 2yo winner; with a top trainer but this 4yo is in a tough race against males on her belated debut.
OUR TIP
Form: 1 D
OR:
W: 9st 9lb
Age: 3 yo Colt
Belied a market drift, slow start and evident inexperience to win by just over 5l at 7-1 on debut in the Wood Ditton at Newmarket (1m, good) four weeks ago; leading claims under a 6lb penalty for top stable that has won the last three runnings of this race.
Form: 3
OR:
W: 9st 3lb
Age: 3 yo Gelding
Displayed ability when third of five at 33-1 on debut at Doncaster (7f, good to firm) three weeks ago; open to improvement but a sizeable step forward is needed if he’s to threaten in this hot contest.
4 (8)
Ervani uniform
Form: 2
OR:
W: 9st 3lb
Age: 3 yo Colt
4-1 when runner-up to the experienced, 1-4 favourite on recent debut at Wetherby (1m, good to firm); his attractive pedigree suggests that he will progress and he’s in good hands to do just that.
5 (2)
Lord DOr uniform
Form: 6-
OR:
W: 9st 3lb
Age: 3 yo Colt
His dam was a German 1m Group 3 winner and he could be much sharper today than at Kempton (7f, AW) last August on sole 2yo start, when slowly away and soundly beaten; however, others have far more obvious claims.
Form: 4-
OR:
W: 9st 3lb
Age: 3 yo Gelding
Late headway when fourth of ten, beaten just over 7l, at 80-1 on debut in a warm maiden at Doncaster (1m, soft) last September; others have much stronger form but there’s plenty of potential in his pedigree and he could be capable of considerably better; not ruled out each-way.
Form: 2
OR:
W: 9st 3lb
Age: 3 yo Colt
200,000gns yearling who was well backed into 100-30 when runner-up on last month’s debut at Yarmouth (1m, good); that form reads very well in view of the subsequent handicap exploits of the first and third and he looks to have a very bright future; one to consider.
Form: 2
OR:
W: 8st 12lb
Age: 3 yo Filly
Sister to a Swedish winner; 12-1 when 1l second of five on debut at Ripon (1m2f, good) three weeks ago; could settle better today in a first-time hood and she’s open to improvement, but this tough task may be beyond her.

Betting Forecast

12/1 Pearl, 10/11 Portcullis, 50/1 Celtic Chariot, 10/1 Ervani, 25/1 Lord DOr, 33/1 Test Run, 7/4 Weheedd, 25/1 Always Blue

Verdict

Royal runner PORTCULLIS was seriously impressive in the Wood Ditton at Newmarket last month and is taken to make it 2-2. Weheedd is another very nice prospect, however, having finished second on his debut in a hot novice at Yarmouth last month. He looks to be the standout danger, ahead of Wetherby runner-up Ervani.[Ben Hutton]
