The unbeaten Bow Echo tops the 2000 Guineas market as 15 were declared for the first classic of the season this morning.
The Night Of Thunder colt marked himself as a smart type when a four length winner on debut at Newbury. Bow Echo followed that up in listed company, beating the Gosden-trained Publish. He signed off his season with a comfortable win in the Royal Lodge, beating Chesham winner Humidity. Billy Loughnane, who has transcended his rising star status to now a regular winner of big races, bids to land his first classic.
The Coolmore Derby bingo has eventually come to an end as Gstaad is the sole runner for Aidan O’Brien. Puerto Rico, Causeway and Flushing Meadows didn’t feature among the declarations this morning. The son of Starspangledbanner was electric in the Coventry Stakes last season, ending his season with a Breeders’ Cup success. However, he has to prove he can bely his pedigree for this stiff mile test. Gstaad also holds a Derby entry, and should he defy his breeding it’ll be fascinating to see the route he goes down this season.
Godolphin triply represented
Last year’s winner Charlie Appleby bids for a third 2000 Guineas with both Distant Storm and King’s Trail. The former was behind Gstaad when third in the Dewhurst, though staying on to suggest this trip will suit. The latter could be anything, as he’s unbeaten in two starts at Kempton, adopting a similar profile as the yard 2024 2000 Guineas winner Notable Speech.
Godolphin are represented by another in Avicenna, saddled by Roger Varian. The Starspangledbanner colt was an eye-catcher in the Craven, confirming the promise of his unbeaten two-year-old campaign.
Oxagon seeks to uphold that Craven form with Avicenna, with connections re-applying the successful cheek-pieces. He will have to defy the trends, as no winner of the classic has worn headgear this century. Not only that, but the last Craven winner to land the double was in 2004. Gosden will be hoping he can go one better than stablemate Field Of Gold to break that curse.
One of two supplementary entries, Padraig Dawn will give 25-year-old Charlie Pike his first runner in a classic. By Saxon Warrior out of a Moyglare winner, he’s certainly bred for the job.
Kieran Shoemark bids to amend the heartbreak of last season as he rides Into The Sky for Jim Boyle. The Starman colt was a seven length winner on debut, subsequently part-purchased by Doreen Tabor prior to his Mill Reef second.
Red Rock’s first and second Thesecretadversary and Power Blue seek to confirm their strong seasonal debuts.
Needle Match, Venetian Prince, Billecart, Lord Britain and Greenham winner Alparslan make up the remaining runners in what looks set to be a fascinating classic to kick the season off.
