Age

There’s a real standout trend when looking back at winners of the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase in the last 20 years as in those two decades a whopping 15 of the 20 winners have been aged seven. From the likes of Denman (2007) to Bobs Worth (2012) to last year’s winner The Real Whacker, they have all been aged seven years old and it’s that age that has been the dominant figure.

There’s been a solitary five-year-old winner (Star de Mohaison in 2006) and and one six-year-old (Don Poli in 2015) in the last 20 years, while surprisingly there have been a trio of eight-year-old winners, but it’s hard not to look in the direction of the seven-year-olds when trying to unearth the winner of the Brown Advisory on day two of the meeting.

Starting Price

It’s a bit of a mixed bag when assessing the starting prices of the winner of the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase over the last 20 years as there has been one winning odds-on favourite (Monkfish 2021) while there’s only been one winner bigger than 20/1 and that was the Willie Mullins-trained Rule Supreme, who was a shock 25/1 winner way back in 2024.

Five of the last nine winners have been sent off favourite, but they have won at backable prices and the most popular trend appears to back the horses between 11/10 and 7/1 as they accommodates 11 of the last 20 winners. A race that can often attract competitive fields the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase is one of the more intriguing betting heats in the Grade 1 novice division at the Cheltenham Festival.

Rating

In the last 20 years three winners of the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase hadn’t been given an official rating from the handicapper, which includes the mighty Denman, who obliterated his rivals in the 2007 race. However, of the 17 officially rated winners in the last two decades there has only been on horse rated above 161 and that was the classy Monkfish, who landed the 2021 race at long odds-on.

The most regular rating to win the race comes between 151 and 155, but this race shows plenty of horses will line up with a notable chance whether they are rated in the low 140s or the high 150s. Just looking at the stats below there’s not much that can be taken by the official ratings of winners in recent times.

Official Rating Of Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase Winners In Last 20 Years

  • 141-145 – 3 winners
  • 146-150 – 3 winners
  • 151-155 – 7 winners
  • 156-160 – 3 winners
  • 161+ – 1 winner

*3 winners had no official rating when winning (Denman, Trabolgan, Rule Supreme)
