Defending champion Langer Dan is on course in his attempt to be the first horse to win two editions of the Coral Cup as Dan Skelton’s charge appears among 72 entries for big-field handicap on day two of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival. The seven-year-old has not been seen to best effect this season, but has fallen to last year’s winning mark in the process.
Langer Dan was among ten wins for British-based trainers a year ago and other fancies for the home side include Doddiethegreat for Nicky Henderson and Springwell Bay for Jonjo O’Neill. Both have been given an entry and are likely runners in this event.
Irish trainers won this in both 2021 and 2022, and though Willie Mullins has only won this race once, with Bleu Berry, his unexposed Sa Majeste is among the favourites for this contest. The six-year-old is owned by JP McManus and has run just two times for the winningest trainer in Cheltenham Festival history.
