Nicky Henderson’s Old Park Star, Gordon Elliott’s El Cairos and the Dan Skelton-trained Mydaddypaddy are three of the big names amongst the list of 64 horses entered for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, which is run on day one of the Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday 10 March.
Old Park Star rocketed to the head of the ante-post betting last weekend with an 18-length annihilation of his rivals in the Rossington Main Novices’ Hurdle at Haydock Park, and the Seven Barrows inmate will look to hand Henderson his sixth win in the festival curtain-raiser.
Fifth in last season’s Champion Bumper, when owned and ridden by David Maxwell, El Cairos was set to bag an impressive win at Leopardstown on Boxing Day, but a final flight tumble saw him fail to get the win, however, the way he travelled through the race suggested there’s a lot more to come over timber and is another notable runner.
Mydaddypaddy was another that failed to get his head in front over Christmas, as Dan Skelton’s charge was beaten in the Grade 1 Formby Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree, but they went no pace at all that day and the Skelton team certainly still hold him in very high regard, and is another that has a huge chance of bagging the Grade 1 showpiece in the spring.
Willie Mullins has been the dominant figure in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in recent years, but the eight-times winning trainer doesn’t appear to have a primary contender for the contest at this stage, but with some key trials to take place over the coming weeks then it will be interesting to see what Closutton youngsters take their chance. Currently, the likes of former Royal Ascot hero and Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle winner Sober and Fairyhouse maiden hurdle winner Mighty Park looking two of his most notable entries.
Joseph O’Brien’s Talk The Talk was a Grade 3 winner at Fairyhouse two starts ago, but was a faller in Grade 1 company at Leopardstown last time out, in a race won by Skylight Hustle, and that pair could feature in what is shaping into a wide open Supreme this year.
Harry Derham’s Mossy Fen Road and Harry Fry’s Idaho Sun are another couple of British-trained runners that could take their chance in the 2026 renewal. With a hugely competitive contest on the horizon, take a look at all the Supreme entries below.
