Cheveley Park Stakes result: Sun Goddess wins at Newmarket

The Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket was won by Sun Goddess, who gave Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore another top-level success. The winner returned at 5/6 and beat Libertango by a length, with Alwaysanangel a length and a half further back in third.

Snowing and Moonrise established a strong pace over the six furlongs on the Rowley Mile, while Sun Goddess travelled in midfield alongside Senorita Bonita. Libertango, ridden by Billy Loughnane, made her challenge from the rear of the field on the far side.

Sun Goddess found more when Moore asked her to quicken on the rising ground. She moved clear of Libertango in the closing stages, while Senorita Bonita, the Prix Morny winner, finished fifth.

The six-runner race was run on good to firm ground, with the course watered. It was Sun Goddess’s third Group 1 win of the season, following victories in the Phoenix Stakes and Moyglare Stud Stakes.

Aidan O’Brien hails Sun Goddess after Cheveley Park win

Speaking after the race, O’Brien told PA via RTÉ: “That is a massive run after winning over seven furlongs on soft ground, it was some change today. It was a massive test and she’s passed it.”

The Ballydoyle trainer added: “She looks a freak doesn’t she to be doing what she is doing and you have to remember she’s a two-year-old filly racing at the top level every day.”

O’Brien said the next few days would determine whether Sun Goddess heads to the Breeders’ Cup, adding: “We’ll see how she is and the next week or so will tell us how she is and whether this has taken much out of her.”
