3.30 Yarmouth – TAFREEJ (2pt win – 5/2 generally)
This is a tricky little race, but TAFREEJ is surely the one to side with, having almost overcome an unpromising position at Chester when drawn wide and stuck at the rear of the field. He became unbalanced but stuck to the task strongly from off the pace. The second has won since, and the fourth previously chased home Britannia second New Endeavour. That looks the strongest piece of form on offer easily without considering his previous third at Goodwood when he was unable to get a clear run at things until it was too late behind one who dictated the fractions. He should have too much speed for these rivals today and should be a clear favourite on the form book. Maximilian Caesar can fill out the second spot.
8.10 Newmarket – POWERDRESS (1pt win – 16/1 generally)
I am not willing to give up on POWERDRESS, particularly given that this is the first time she is dropping back to an ideal distance. Connections tried to turn her into a 1,000 Guineas horse, but she is not a miler, although that really doesn’t excuse her latest poor run. It will need to be taken on trust that she is able to bounce out of that defeat, but there’s compensation in the price to do so. She shaped with considerable promise on debut as a two-year-old when relishing the Rowley Mile undulations and getting up late to score over five furlongs. She then shaped well on return behind Majestic Pride and Holguin, with High Royal in behind at the same venue over seven furlongs, but she lacked the finishing kick. She may be worth chancing now down to six, given she is bred for sprinting and in the hope the short break has freshened her up. She is fairly treated on two of her three runs, and she certainly has more to come and looks a tad overpriced at double-figure odds. Back her no shorter than 8/1.
8.30 Chester – TAJAWAL *NAP* (2pt win – 11/4 generally)
TAJAWAL is surely a well-handicapped horse with this opening rating of 85, given the balance of his form, and you could easily argue he should be unbeaten. He made a very promising debut at Kempton in a race that has worked out extremely well when finding the line coming too quickly a neck behind Mr Mistoffelees (89). He was then beaten at odds of 1/2 when ducking right down the home straight, only to finish with running left one length behind useful pair Wonder Legend (94) and Mr Buster (94) before heading to Sandown and being dragged across the track by an 18/1 chance losing any hope of winning the race. Still, he did remarkably well to only be beaten seven lengths when staying on strongly at the finish behind Artistic Star (106) and Torito (105). He bolted up at Ayr over Lil Frank when showing a smart turn of foot, and given the way he railed there, he should enjoy this turning track. He may face competition for the lead from Balance Play, but this track may not suit him, and Harry Davies claiming a further three off the selection means he makes stacks of appeal here off 85. Theme Park is one to take seriously for Nigel Tinkler.
