4.20 Carlisle – DREAM HARDER (1pt win – 10/3 Bet365 + William Hill, 3/1 generally)

I missed a few horses that backed up to win over the past ten days, which is frustrating. Still, although having run at York during my off time, DREAM HARDER was amongst inexperienced riders, and he was hampered by a loose horse when travelling strongly at York. Still,  Alice Stevens needed to give him more of a forced ride behind a course specialist. He finished with running left there and was extremely unlucky for this column on his penultimate start at Chester. He has now recorded three RPRs in the 90s in his last three outings, and in the hands of Ben Curtis today – who has won the last two renewals of this contest  – should see him go well with the handicapper giving him a chance. He drops in grade into a Class 4 contest today, and this stiff uphill finish should play to his strong finishing effort. Joe Fanning on the favourite is thankfully drawn out in 14, which means he shouldn’t be able to dictate a steady pace as he has tried to do on Knightswood, and there is an abundance of pace pushers drawn lower than the selection in this contest. There’s little doubt this four-year-old has more to come on turf after just six starts.

4.50 Carlisle – LADY ONYX (1pt win – 3/1 generally)

It was a very strongly run contest at Musselburgh when LADY ONYX finished a three-length third to White Moonlight – the fastest by a considerable margin of the three seven-furlong races on the card. That performance suggested her jump from a soft ground Gowran Maiden victory into a Listed contest on just her second start was justified, and given she is bred for a bit further than this, the stiff uphill finish here at Carlisle should be right up her street. She finished with running left at Musselburgh, suggesting a sterner test of stamina would suit, and she wasn’t short of speed having been slowly into stride. She has a formidable opponent in Secret Angel here today, but Karl Burke’s runner has yet to be the strongest at the finish over this distance of seven furlongs, and this uphill climb to the line could see her vulnerable. Ceanna disappointed this column at Newmarket, having been identified as well-handicapped off 79, and she has since won by nine lengths at Southwell to confirm that theory (now 95), but this is a big ask of her. Miss Jungle Cat is interesting but may need another run under her belt, and Glenlaurel has a bigger effort in her.

5.20 Carlisle – GREYCIOUS ANNA (1pt win – 10/1 generally)

GREYCIOUS ANNA has been overlooked in the market, likely because she has been off for 263 days and looked to put in a disappointing effort at York when last seen. Still, Karl Burke can ready one first time up, and she was better than the bare result at York when travelling strongly at the rear before being continuously denied a clear run and then finishing tamely. She has since had a wind operation back in April, and she returns to the track on a very fair mark of 74 in a winnable race and is less exposed than many of these. She was progressive last term, scoring at Redcar over the 92-rated Cite d’Or before doing the best of those from off the pace at Ayr behind Caernarfon (112)and Misty Blues (87). That was an excellent run, given those on the front end dictated the pace from the outset, and the presence of Clifford Lee for the first time suggests she may be ready to roll. She looks good value over the top of this market, which is weak.
