Ed Bethell welcomes any rain for Paborus at York

Ed Bethell is raring to step Paborus up in grade at York this week after a frustrating dry spell. The Wathnan-owned son of Recoletus has had a fragmented career, though a prolific one with five wins from eight races.

Paborus returned from 364 days off to win the Chipchase Stakes in June. Bethell was adamant beforehand he’d need the run, but he conjured up a strong performance to beat Marvelman. Given he is evidently fragile, Bethell has kept him away from quick ground throughout the summer.

Bethell will be pleased to see the rain hitting the track overnight, with Paborus raring to go. Speaking to the Racing Post, Ed Bethell said: “The rain looks like it might be arriving. There could be some rain on Monday and Tuesday and I hope it keeps raining.

“I’d love to get him out but he needs a bit of juice in the ground. He’s been great since Newcastle, he literally hasn’t run because of the ground. I just hope we get enough rain for him

to run so he can showcase what he can do.”

Waiting for soft ground ‘not an easy task,’ says Bethell

Despite a winner on a firmer surface, Bethell is sure Paborus is better suited with ease in the going. He has to step up, but his latest performance was certainly a commanding one. “I’m very excited” said Bethell. “He’s a great horse to have in the yard and I hope he can do everyone a good service.” However, he has admitted it is difficult to remain patient with soft ground becoming a rarity.

“It’s not an easy task. You’re lifting horses up and you have to bring them back down then lift them up again. It’s hard but I’m just very fortunate to have a nice horse like him. I really hope that we can go on and have a bit of fun with him this autumn. When it does finally rain.”

The City of York Stakes takes place on Saturday and received Group 1 status last season. As the sole seven furlong Group 1, the race has attracted some smart entrants. Notable Speech heads the market, though we haven’t seen him since his Queen Anne disappointment.

Lake Forest was an unlucky second in this race last season, and far from disgraced in the Sussex last time out. Zavateri ran a huge race in the Sussex returning from 102 days off, and further adding to what looks an excellent race on paper.
