Epsom Derby Entries 2026: 41 remain in contention for Classic glory

A total of 41 horses have stood their ground for the 2026 Epsom Derby. The fourth Classic is the most cherished of them all and takes place this year on Saturday 6 June.

Epsom has been the domain of Ballydoyle in recent years. The last three runnings of the Derby have gone to Aidan O’Brien, with Lambourn completing the hat-trick in 2025. O’Brien appears intent to keep the trophy in safe keeping, as he is responsible for almost half of those left in the race. 16 of the 41 are under his care.

They include the five ante-post market leaders. The current market leader and recently deposed favourite are both among them in Benvenuto Cellini and Pierre Bonnard. The former will have his credentials tested at Chester on Wednesday, while the latter was well-held on his return at Leopardstown.

That day, Christmas Day won the Group 3 Ballysax Stakes. He has emerged as yet another contender for the Derby for O’Brien, while Hawk Mountain (an intended runner in the Prix du Jockey Club) and Constitution River complete the quintet.

In terms of British participants, Blue Riband Trial hero Saxon Street is among the more prominent contenders. He is trained by Johhn & Thady Gosden, as is Water To Wine. William Haggas’ duo of Maltese Cross and Morshdi have also remained entered for the £2,000,000 prize.
