48 fillies remain in contention for the 2024 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket on Sunday, 5th May. They are headlined by the last name on the current racecard, Ylang Ylang, who won the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile for Aidan O’Brien and Coolmore at the end of last season.
The daughter of Frankel improved throughout her juvenile year, going from finishing last of nine in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh to staying on strongly over 1m on soft ground on the Rowley Mile in October. She had also been third over the sharper 7f on good to firm ground in Rockfel Stakes at that venue, so a thorough test of stamina at the trip is what she will appreciate most.
The previous ante-post favourite had been her stablemate Opera Singer. She started her campaign 10½ lengths behind Ylang Yland in a Curragh maiden, but had improved no end by the conclusion, claiming a Group 3 at the same track by 6½ lengths in August, then stepping up to Group 1 company with a blistering success in the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp. However, injury in the build-up means she is likely to head for the Irish 1,000 Guineas on home soil instead.
Chief among the British hopes for the race is Karl Burke’s Fallen Angel. She won the Moyglare Stud Stakes in which Ylang Ylang finished last, though that signalled the end of her season earlier than most. She will therefore have a longer break to overcome, but had showed a smart turn of foot to win her races previously.
Dance Sequence and One Look are next in for Charlie Appleby and Paddy Twomey respectively. The Godolphin filly has won both starts and knuckled down well despite greenness to land the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket in October. We have only had one look at the latter, but that was all that was needed to recognise her immense potential. She won by six lengths on debut from some smart fillies in the Goffs Million at the Curragh, ensuring quite the coup for her owners.
