2000 Guineas Odds: City Of Troy dominant in betting for Newmarket Classic

With the Flat season on the horizon, here at GG we take a look at the first Classic of the season, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, which takes place at Newmarket on Saturday 4th May. We take a look at the latest odds for the three-year-old Group 1, which sees a red-hot favourite in the shape of Aidan O’Brien’s City Of Troy, who looks the one they all have to beat.

A two-and-a-half length winner on debut, City Of Troy then went to steamroller his rivals in a six-and-a-half length romp in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket to cement his place as one of the most exciting juveniles in training during the 2023 campaign. Aidan O’Brien then sent the son of Justify back to Newmarket for the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes and he yet again obliterated the field with a three-and-a-half length win.

In the aftermath of that success, City Of Troy was slashed to an odds-on favourite for the 2000 Guineas and the Ballydoyle star is set to make his hotly-anticipated return to the track in the Guineas at the start of May and, widely available at 4/6 with the bookmakers, is going to be the one they all have to beat.

A record-breaking ten wins in the race has seen the O’Brien team dominate the Classic division, but they’ve not claimed the crown since 2019, so will be hoping that City Of Troy can hand them an 11th win. They could also have a strong second, third and fourth string with the likes of Henry Longfellow, River Tiber and Diego Velazquez all potential runners.

One of the biggest threats to City Of Troy is current second favourite Rosallion for Richard Hannon, who ended his two-year-old campaign with a one-length success in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp. He disappointed when third behind Iberian in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster the start before, but he produced a fine display in the French Group 1 and at 6/1 is the clear second best in the betting.

A winner at Southwell last week, Night Raider showed a stunning turn of foot to maintain his unbeaten record, and while a spin on the all-weather is far from a normal prep run for the Guineas the Karl Burke-trained contender showed a real touch of class and with race fitness on his side is a fascinating runner around the 14/1 mark, at the time of writing.

Charlie Appleby’s Ancient Wisdom won the final Group 1 of last season, the Futurity Trophy at Doncaster, and is one that is likely to head to Newmarket in a few weeks time and is around the 16/1 mark with the bookmakers, with the likes of Ghostwriter and Alyanaabi another brace of runners around those odds.
