Seven horses will line up for the 2025 Betfred St Leger at Doncaster this Saturday 13th September, with Aidan O’Brien holding the key. The master of Ballydoyle is responsible for half of the remaining field, with Derby hero Lambourn joined by Goodwood Cup winner Scandinavia among the octet.
Lambourn led all the way for Epsom glory at the start of June before backing that victory up with a gutsy success at the Curragh. He looks a natural to step up in trip should suit, but he did disappoint in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York during the Ebor Festival, so has to bounce back.
Scandinavia starred in the Goodwood Cup last time out and has been hugely progressive for the Ballydoyle team and looks tailor-made for this sort of test of stamina and is entitled to be at the spearhead of the betting.
Queen’s Vase winner Carmers is also in the running, with that victory at Royal Ascot having come over 1m6f and is another that could excel. The runner-up that day, Furthur, retains his place for Andrew Balding, with the grey having since won the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury in commanding fashion.
O’Brien’s contingent is concluded with Stay True, fourth in the Great Voltigeur Stakes ahead of Lambourn last time and another who could relish this test and could be a leading each-way play for punters
The consistent Rahiebb and the improving Tarriance add more depth to the field for Roger Varian and Andrew Balding respectively, with both having proven their stamina. Balding will be looking for a first win in the race, with Varian having done so twice, with Kingston Hill in 2014 and Eldar Eldarov in 2022.
