GG tipster Andrew Mount reveals his list of eyecatchers from the past week’s racing.
BELL EX ONE (third, 2m Grade 3 juvenile handicap hurdle, Cheltenham, Tuesday, March 15)
BELL EX ONE ran a blinder on his debut for Paul Nicholls, finishing a 28-1 third of 21 in the Fred Winter. Fitted with first-time blinkers on his first outing for six months, he fared best of those who were ridden patiently in the early stages, going down by just a length and a half. His record over hurdles now reads 2111 (3-4) and his trainer’s post-race comments suggested that the undulations of Cheltenham weren’t ideal. He reportedly heads to Australia later this year but look out for him at Aintree or Ayr beforehand.
CELEBRE D’ALLEN (fifth, 2m4.5f Grade 3 handicap chase, Cheltenham, Thursday, March 17)
I got quite a lot of stick on the Cheltenham preview circuit for suggesting that CELBERE D’ALLEN’s patient running style was less than ideal for the Stable Plate but so it proved, with him doing second best of the hold-up horses in fifth. The 4-1 shot could never strike a meaningful blow, going down by just over ten lengths to Coole Cody. His record for Philip Hobbs now reads 1115 (3-4) and he’s going to win plenty more races on tracks kinder to his running style.
CHAMBARD (won, 3m2f amateur riders’ handicap chase, Cheltenham, Thursday, March 17)
CHAMBARD sneaked into the Kim Muir thanks to the 5lb penalty he picked up for winning at Huntingdon earlier in the month and his 40-1 victory took his record since undergoing wind surgery to 122111 (4-6), with the latest defeat by a head when given far too much to do. He scored with far more in hand than the two and a half-length winning margin suggests and he can complete his hat-trick.

CONFLATED (fell, 2m5f Grade 1 chase, Cheltenham, March 17)
Having bet CONFLATED to win, without the favourite Allaho and in a reversed forecast with that one it was gutting to see him fall two out when disputing second place. It’s doubtful he would have troubled the winner but he stays further and it certainly would have been more interesting than the finish we were presented with. I doubt we’ll see him take up his Grand National entry (he’s 66-1 for that race) but he’ll be very interesting at Punchestown.
DUSART (fifth, 3m Grade 1 novices’ chase, Cheltenham, Wednesday, March 16)
DUSART finished a respectable fifth to L’Homme Presse in the Brown Advisory on what was only his third chase start. This was his first outing on ground slower than good to soft and he’ll be something to bet on at Aintree where he was placed in Grade 1 company over hurdles last season.
FAROUK D’ALENE (fell, 3m Grade 1 novices’ chase, Cheltenham, Wednesday, March 16)
FAROUK D’ALENE was probably booked for second place when falling two out in the Brown Advisory and will be one to side with at Punchestown. He has made mistakes and occasionally jumped out to his right on left-handed tracks previously and might prove best right-handed. His record that way round reads 1112 (3-4), with the defeat by a short head.
FREEDOM TO DREAM (fourth, 2m4.5f conditional jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle, Friday, March 18)
FREEDOM TO DREAM came from further back than ideal to finish a 20-1 fourth in the Martin Pipe on his first outing in handicap company. The seven-year-old had run a respectable fourth to Minella Cocooner in Grade 1 company at the Dublin Racing Festival and looks one to follow closely when he goes chasing next season.

HOME BY THE LEE (sixth, 3m Grade 1 hurdle, Cheltenham, Thursday, March 17)
Three-time winning chaser HOME BY THE LEE ran a cracker in the Stayers’ Hurdle, finishing just over seven lengths behind Flooring Porter in a 33-1 sixth. He recorded a career-best RPR (Racing Post Rating) of 157 and jumps progeny of Fame And Glory seem to be getting better with age, with the eight-year-olds, the sire’s oldest crop, showing a profit of £59.75 to a £1 level stake.
MAX DYNAMO (third, 3m1f handicap chase, Wincanton, Monday, March 21)
It’s not easy to win from off the pace in chase company at Wincanton but MAX DYNAMO did so twice earlier this year. His hat-trick of come-from-behind Wincanton wins was denied when going down by just half-a-length in third but he emerged with great credit, as the pair that beat him were up with the pace throughout.
PARTY BUSINESS (fifth, 2m4.5f conditional jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle, Friday, March 18)
PARTY BUSINESS was badly hampered by a faller in the early stages of the Martin Pipe and was left with plenty to do. He flew at the finish to grab a 28-1 fifth of 23 on his handicap debut and should find another race before the season is out.
