CONSENSUS DE VEGA, fourth, 7f handicap, Lingfield, Thursday, August 11th
The Roger Varian-trained CONSENUS DE VEGA was sent off as the 11-4 favourite for this 7f three-year-old handicap but a patient ride form stall 11 made life very difficult and he could never get involved. He was six lengths back in fourth but did second best of those to come from off the pace behind Honky Tonk Man (see below) and the market could overreact to this performance next time.
COUNTRY PYLE, second, 2m handicap, Lingfield, Thursday, August 11th
The concluding 2m handicap on Racing League night was run to suit the closers, with five of the first six finishers given patient rides. COUNTRY PYLE, the 7-2 favourite, tracker the leader before taking up the running over two furlongs and looked sure to hold on. However, he was worn down by Diamond Bay in the shadows of the post and had to settle for a three-quarters of a length second. This was a solid effort and there are more races to be won with her.
DESERT EMPEROR, fifth, 1m4f handicap, Lingfield, Thursday, August 11th
After prominent racers had dominated the majority of the earlier races, the jockeys can be excused for getting racing too soon in this 1m4f handicap. Six of the first seven home came from midfield of further back, with DESERT EMPEROR doing best of the prominent racers in sixth, just under four lengths behind the winner. His three wins have come at Wolverhampton and he’ll be very interesting when returned to Tapeta.
HONKY TONK MAN, third, 7f handicap, Lingfield, Thursday, August 11th
Severe kickback made it hard for the closers to get involved over the shorter trips at Lingfield last Thursday and the usual ‘dead’ rail went missing, which resulted in plenty of winners challenging hard up against the inside. This 7f handicap was dominated by the pace horses, with 14-1 shot Buckshaw Village, who raced in second place, overhauling frontrunner Ideal Guest (18-1) in the final furlong. HONKY TONK MAN came from off the pace to grab third after meeting trouble in running and can be regarded as unlucky. His record on the all-weather now reads 113 (2-3).
IMMORTAL BEAUTY, won, 7f handicap, Lingfield, Thursday, August 11th
It looked like the pace horses would dominate the 7f nursery, as they had done in the earlier Racing League contests, but IMMORTAL BEAUTY defied clouds of kickback to come through strongly from the rear and win going away. Richard Hannon’s daughter of Cotai Glory now has form figures since stepped up beyond 5f of 211 (2-3), with the defeat by a head at 14-1.
NEANDRA, eighth, 1m4f handicap, Lingfield, Thursday, August 11th
NEANDRA started at just 11-8 for this 13-runner handicap on the strength of last month’s course and distance six-length demolition job. However, her prominent style was at a disadvantage, and she probably didn’t appreciate the big field (her wins have come in fields of eight or fewer runners). She’s worth another chance.
REDRESSED, third, 9.5f fillies & mares maiden, Gowran Park, Wednesday, August 10th
REDDRESSED was sent off at just 11-4 on her debut but Ger Lyon’s filly was given a patient ride on a track that massively favoured early pace. She wasn’t helped by switching wide to challenge and could never get to grips with Believeinmiracles who made virtually all. She displayed obvious signs of inexperience under pressure and will know more next time.
ROYAL AVIATION, fourth, 1m2f handicap, Lingfield, Thursday, August 11th
This 1m2f handicap was another frontrunners’ benefit with the first three finishers described by the Racing Post as ‘prominent, pressed leader after 1f’, ‘led, headed but prominent after 1f’ and ‘prominent, dropped to midfield over 8f out’. ROYAL AVIATION did well to stay on into a modest fourth from off the pace and is worth another chance. He has entries at Newbury on Friday and at Sandown on Saturday.
TADREEB, seventh, 7f handicap, Lingfield, Thursday, August 11th
On a night of horrendous kickback, TADREEB (stall 14 of 14) did well to finish seventh in the Racing League opener, just under four lengths behind the winner. The four-year-old’s four wins (two of them for Mark Johnston) have come in single-figure line-ups and he can be supported the next time he runs in a small field.
THUNDER FLASH, second, 1m4f handicap, Kempton, Wednesday, August 10th
THUNDER FLASH won in first-time cheekpieces and in a first-time visor at Leicester earlier this summer and connections tried to get the full set when fitting the five-year-old gelding with first-time blinkers at Kempton last Wednesday. Sent off at evens, his patient style was at a disadvantage and he had to settle for a one-length second to Myriad. The winner was just touched off when bidding to follow up at Lingfield on Monday and Thunder Flash can go one better in the near future. He’s entered at Wolverhampton tomorrow (August 17th).
