Andrew Mount's Eyecatchers - August 9th 2022

GG tipster Andrew Mount reveals his list of eyecatchers from the past week’s racing. Find out which runners he wants to keep onside below, alongside bet365‘s new customer offer of £50 in Free Bets when you deposit £10.

ADAAY IN ASIA, won, 6f handicap, Ascot, Saturday, August 6th

Harry Dunlop’s ADAAY IN ASIA continued her progression when landing a punt for GG Weekend Watch viewers in the 6f Shergar Cup Sprint. This strong traveller now has form figures over 6f from June to August of 1113111 (6-7) for a profit of £36.85 to a £1 level stake at SP. She could be out again at Pontefract this weekend.

ALREHB, second, 7f handicap, Doncaster, Thursday, August 4th

With the wind in their faces, this 7f racing league handicap was dominated by those who came from off the pace, with the winner (‘took keen hold, held up in rear’), third (‘towards rear’) and fourth (‘dwelt start, held up in rear’) all out the back in the early stages. The exception was runner-up ALREHB (‘prominent, led narrowly over 2f out’) who did extremely well to go down by just a neck. His record at this specialist trip now reads 11202 (2-5), with the ‘duck egg’ in the 27-runner Victoria Cup at Ascot.

ISLA KAI, fifth, 1m handicap, Ascot, Saturday, August 6th

ISLA KAI again disappointed on fast ground, this time finishing a three-length fifth of ten in the Shergar Cup Mile. His record on officially good to soft or softer going stands at 1111 (4-4) and he could win a big prize this autumn.

KING OF STARS, fifth, 5f handicap, Ascot, Saturday, August 6th

It’s never easy top make the running on the straight course at Ascot and 4-1 shot KING OF STARS can be forgiven his fifth place in the Shergar Cup Dash. A smaller field will suit next time and his record in fields of seven or fewer runners reads 114311156 (5-9) for a profit of 22.88. In larger line-ups, he’s zero from 21.

NEW DEFINITION, second, 5f conditions stakes, Musselburgh, Friday, August 5th

The rail advantage was massive in the sprints at Musselburgh last week and Looking For Lynda overcame an in-running high of 1000 when rallying against the fence to deny odds-on favourite NEW DEFINITION in the three-runner conditions contest for two-year-olds. He might be able to go one better at Ripon this Saturday.

RICHARD P SMITH, third, 1m handicap, Lingfield, Saturday, August 6th

RICHARD P SMITH challenged in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail when a close second from off the pace over 1m2f here on July 30th and earned the tag of ‘chief swamp dweller’ again, this time when cutting out the early running in a 1m handicap. His third place can be upgraded.

ROSE FANDANGO, second, 7f fillies’ handicap, Wolverhampton, Monday, August 8th

Scott Dixon’s horses can usually be relied upon to race up with the pace but ROSE FANDANGO, who made the early running when successful over trip and track last month, was patiently ridden by Jonathan Fisher. She was left with way too much to do in a steadily-run contest and was still four lengths down in second place at the line. She left the impression that she would have gone close at least had she been given her usual prominent ride, perhaps when the money is down (she drifted to 7-2 from 5-2 here).

ROYAL HEART, sixth, 7f classified stakes, Wolverhampton, Monday, August 8th

Like Secret To Success (see below), ROYAL HEART was given a patient ride in the 7f classified contest at Wolverhampton on Monday and could never get involved on a track that was massively favouring early pace. Ed Dunlop’s 11-2 shot had to settle for sixth place, over 11 lengths behind the winner, but it was still an effort worthy of an uplift. Both his wins have come in big fields at Kempton and the return to that venue will obviously suit.

SECRET TO SUCCESS, fourth, 7f classified stakes, Wolverhampton, Monday, August 8th

Wolverhampton was a frontrunners’ benefit on Monday, so it was disappointing that the usually reliable Hollie Doyle didn’t cotton on to the bias, giving Phil McEntee’s filly SECRET TO SUCCESS a patient ride. She could never strike a blow against the three prominent racers and had to settle for a nine-and-a-half length fourth. This run was better than the margin of defeat suggests, and she can be supported next time.

TELLUS, second, 7f maiden, Catterick, Tuesday, August 2nd

TELLUS, a 12-1 newcomer trained by John Quinn, did well to finish a three-quarters of a length second to evens favourite Kyeema and running green and losing a shoe. The winner got first dibs on the favoured stands’ side rail, and she’ll soon find a race on this evidence.
