GG tipster Andrew Mount reveals his list of eyecatchers from the past week’s racing. Find out which runners he wants to keep onside below, alongside bet365‘s new customer offer of £50 in Free Bets when you deposit £10.
BOPEDRO (fourth, 1m handicap, Ascot, Saturday, July 23)
It was hard to come from too far back in the 1m Porsche Handicap at Ascot last Saturday and David O’Meara’s BOPEDRO deserves extra credit for his fourth place. Slowly away, he was held up in rear and switched widest of all for a run, going down by three lengths. This was his first run for the yard and there should be improvement to come.
GABRIAL THE DEVIL (tenth, 6f handicap York, Saturday, July 23)
GABRIAL THE DEVIL ran better than his 66-1 tenth of 15 implied, doing fourth best of those to come from off the pace. Seven of his nine wins, including the last six, have come on left-handed tracks and he’ll be happier when returned to the likes of Chester where he’s won during the month of September in each of the past two years.
KAATIBB (won, 1m handicap, Lingfield, Wednesday, July 20th)
KAATIBB was all the rage to break his duck, going off as the 5-4 favourite in the 0-80 handicap. He broke smartly and made the running to score by a neck, despite racing closer to the inside rail than the two rivals who applied considerable pressure in the latter stages. He settled better than in previous starts and can progress from this.
LITTLE MISS DYNAMO (seventh, Ascot, Friday, July 22)
LITTLE MISS DYNAMO wouldn’t look an obvious one for the tracker as she’s finished last of seven in both runs this term. However, she paid for going too fast in a three-way dispute of the lead at Chester on July 9th and she hung to the left when failing to beat a rival at Ascot last Friday. Both her wins came at Ripon and she clearly appreciated having a rail to her immediate left when making all there last August. She could go well when returned to a left-handed venue or when drawn high on a straight course.
MANHATTAN DANDY (third, 7f apprentice handicap, Dundalk, Saturday, July 23)
MANHATTAN DANDY was well drawn in stall 1 of 14 but patient tactics were no help, and he could never get to grips with the frontrunners. He did well to finish just over two lengths back in third and can go two places better next time.
PARTY ISLAND (won, 1m4f handicap, Lingfield, Wednesday, July 20th)
It’s hard to win round the inside here, especially over the longer trips, but PARTY ISLAND did so by five lengths at odds of 13-2. His record on Polytrack now reads 65111517211 (6-11) for a profit of £35.88 to a £1 level stake at SP. In handicaps of 1m+ when returned to the track within six weeks of his previous outings, those figures improve to 11151211 (6-8) for a profit of £38.88.
SHE’S THE DANGER (second, 6f handicap, Doncaster, Thursday, July 21st)
SHE’S THE DANGER found only 8-15 favourite Willem Twee too good in this 6f handicap and clearly appreciated the return to this venue where she won over an extra furlong last month. She wore cheekpieces for the first time, but the straight track might have been more important. Her record on straight courses now reads 4134812 (2-7), compared to 368448 (0-6) when racing on turning tracks.
SILVER SAMURAI (seventh, 6f handicap, York, Saturday, July 23)
SILVER SAMURAI, drawn out of it when 11th of 26 in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot, was sent off as the 4-1 favourite but fears that his patient style would be unsuited to York proved well founded as he came home seventh of the 15 runners. He actually fared best of those ridden patiently and can be given another chance.
TWILIGHT MADNESS (fourth, 6f handicap, Southwell, Wednesday, July 27th)
They were winning from the front, midfield and off the back at Southwell last Wednesday – the first meeting here for several months – but all the winners challenged down the centre of the track in the straight. TWILIGHT MADNESS, the 2-1 favourite for the 6f 0-90 handicap, had a useful draw in stall 7 but was taken to the inside rail by William Carver after being squeezed out at the start and could only finish fourth. This was a solid effort in the circumstances and Simon Hodgson’s colt can be supported next time.
YULONG VOICE (won, 2m4f handicap hurdle, Limerick, Thursday, July 21st)
YULONG VOICE is in my tracker as a horse to back in August/September, so it was a little gutting to see him score in late July. His August record reads 018312 (2-6) and he can follow up, perhaps at Galway this week – he holds entries in the 5.40 on Thursday and 8.40 on Friday.
