Andrew Mount's Eyecatchers June 7, 2022

GG tipster Andrew Mount reveals his list of eyecatchers from the past week’s racing. Find out which ten he believes should be kept in your trackers, alongside bet365‘s new customer offer of Bet £10 Get £50 In Free Bets.

BENKOGAMBIT (fourth, 1m apprentice handicap, Gowran Park, Monday, June 6)

BENKOGAMBIT, a well-backed 5-1 poke, was on the receiving end of the strong pace bias at Gowran Park on Monday, doing best of those to come from off the pace in fourth.  A slow start but him on the back foot from the outset and he reportedly hung right in the straight. He’s now 0-17 but this was an encouraging first run for Martin Brassil and he’s worth another chance.

CALL ME GINGER (fifth, 6f handicap, Hamilton, Thursday, June 2)

CALL ME GINGER was well backed for the 6f Class 2 handicap but stall 10 of 10 was always going to make life tricky for Jim Goldie’s six-year-old. He ran a cracking race in the circumstances, switching closest to the stands’ side rail (not the place to be) before staying on strongly into fifth). Good or faster ground suits and he runs especially well in September, recording form figures 1206112 (3-7). His only other success came in mid-August.

COREMAN (third, 7f maiden, Gowran Park, Monday, June 6)

As is often the case, it was a pacesetters paradise in the early races at Gowran Park on Monday afternoon (once the jockeys wake up to the bias the later races can see a pace collapse, as several horses want to lead). Culco made all for a comfortable win in the opening 7f maiden, but it was the performance of third-placed COREMAN that caught the eye. The 16-1 newcomer blew the start but kept on well to finish five lengths behind the winner. She’s bred to appreciate the step up to 1m.

END ZONE (11th, 1m handicap, Thirsk, Tuesday, May 31)

END ZONE got into a fierce battle for the early lead with Just Hiss and he dropped away to finish eight and a half lengths behind the winner, beating only the 125-1 outsider home. A smaller field and less pace pressure could see him bounce back to winning ways in the near future.

LADY LEANORA (sixth, 1m apprentice handicap, Gowran Park, Monday, June 6)

LADY LEANORA was sent off as the 4-1 favourite despite her wide draw (stall 15 of 16) and a track that massively biased against patient tactics. She fared best of the prominent racers when runner-up over trip and track last time but had to settle for sixth on this occasion. There are more races in her.

LIGHTSHIP (fourth, 9.5f fillies maiden, Gowran Park, Monday, June 6)

LIGHTSHIP had hinted at ability when a 20-1 ninth of 15 at the Curragh on May 22nd and built on that with a solid 25-1 fourth of 13. She was beaten by 13 lengths, but her patient style was at a huge disadvantage, and she’ll be very interesting once handicapped.

LUCAYAN (second, 1m handicap, Yarmouth, Tuesday, May 31)

Given the obvious stands’ rail bias it was bizarre to see two of the four runners head centre to far side in race six at Yarmouth last Tuesday night. LUCAYAN, sent off at 15-2, was one of the pair and she ran a blinder to go down by just a neck to Mango Bay, the 2-5 favourite, who raced on the favoured rail. She would surely have won had she raced on the same side of the track as the winner and can go one better next time.

SOARING MONARCH (fifth, 7f handicap, Gowran Park, Monday, June 6)

The second race at Gowran Park on Monday again saw the early pace hold up, with the first four home described by the Racing Post as ‘made all’, ‘prominent’, ‘prominent’ and ‘prominent’. SOARING MONARCH fared best of the closers in fifth place and can be supported next time.

SOMEWHERE SECRET (third, 6f handicap, Hamilton, Thursday, June 2)

Stall 10 made life tough for SOMEWHERE SECRET at Hamilton last Thursday, but the veteran ran a cracking race to finish third, despite racing closer to the stands’ rail than ideal (contrary to popular belief, the rail is rarely the place to be in sprint handicaps at Hamilton). The ground would have been a shade quicker than preferred and it’s worth noting that his two 6f runs on soft ground for his current handler, Rebecca Menzies, have produced a 15-2 Redcar win and an 18-1 second at Ayr. He’s in at Nottingham on Thursday.

WYCHWOOD WHISPER (fifth, 1m apprentice handicap, Gowran Park, Monday, June 6)

WYCHWOOD WHISPER was a qualifier on three different betting systems for me, but she was poorly drawn in stall 14 (once adjusted for non-runners) and her patient running style was at a huge disadvantage. The 14-1 shot ran a cracker in the circumstances to finish an eight-length fifth of 16 and will be something to bet on next time. She’d also gone into the tracker after her Dundalk sixth of 14 in February where he challenged on the far side of the track.
