GG tipster Andrew Mount reveals his list of eyecatchers from the past week’s action

BRAZEN IDOL (fifth, 6f handicap, Southwell, Tuesday, December 6th)
BRAZEN IDOL raced keenly off the steady early gallop and got no cover out wide. He wasn’t helped by weaving in and out in the final furlong and his five-length fifth was worthy of an upgrade. He could run at Wolverhampton this Sunday.
CAPTAIN ST LUCIFER (non-runner, 9.4f handicap, Wolverhampton, Monday, December 12th)
CAPTAIN ST LUCIFER, who had the worst of the draw in stall 13 of 13, was withdrawn from the 9.4f handicap at Wolverhampton on Monday, perhaps suggesting that connections thought his turn was near and didn’t want to run him from a bad draw. He’s won just once from 15 all-weather starts but was only beaten by a little over four lengths when a 28-1 sixth of 11 over the 8.6f trip here last month and his sole success came at this time last year.

Mon 12 Dec 2022CATLIN (fourth, 3m2f handicap chase, Southwell, Sunday, December 11th)
Newcastle expert CATLIN (she’s three from three at that venue) took her record away from Gosforth Park to 0-23 when an 18-length fourth of six in this 3m2f handicap chase. Look out for her at her favourite venue.
DASHING TO YOU (non-runner, 1m handicap, Lingfield, Wednesday, December 7th)
DASHING TO YOU, due to run from stall 11 of 12, was pulled out of Lingfield’s opener last Wednesday with a self-certificate (it was due to start at 11.20am, so maybe his alarm clock didn’t go off). He’d looked on his way back when a 40-1 fourth in first-time blinkers at Kempton late last month where he met trouble and fared best of those to come from off the pace. He’s due to run at in the 1.55 race at Lingfield tomorrow (December 14th) and is drawn in stall 4.
FLY THE NEST (non-runner, 9.4f handicap, Wolverhampton, Monday, December 12th)
FLY THE NEST, due to run from stall 12 of 13, failed to take up his engagement, possibly because the race came too soon after last Saturday’s runner-up effort though cynics would say it was most likely because of his wide draw. Tony Carroll’s six-year-old had been in good form over the 8.6f trip here since returning from a summer break, recording form figures of 122 (1-3), and can be supported next time.
MR GAMBINO (non-runner, 9.4f handicap, Wolverhampton, Monday, December 12th)
MR GAMBINO made it a hat-trick of withdrawals for the three highest-drawn runners in the 8.00 at Wolverhampton on Monday night. He’s an 11-race maiden but has run with credit here the last twice, finishing a 66-1 fourth of 11 and a 16-1 fifth of ten. He could reward each-way support when next encountering a strong gallop in a low-grade handicap and, given his patient running style, he could be worth another go at Newcastle despite disappointing in his sole previous course visit.

Mon 12 Dec 2022NEVER ENDING (fourth, 7f novice stakes, Southwell, Tuesday, December 6th)
John & Thady Gosden’s juvenile newcomer NEVER ENDING had a tough draw in stall 13 and was soon playing catch-up after a slow start. The son of No Nay Never ran green and had a mountain to climb as they approached the straight. Switched to the far side, he kept on well to finish less than five lengths back in fourth place behind all-the-way winner Think Climate (10-11 fav) and can be supported next time.
ONTHEFRONTFOOT (third, 2m handicap chase, Doncaster, Friday, December 9th)
The quick ground was ideal for ONTHEFRONTFOOT in the 2m handicap chase at Doncaster last Friday but Donald McCain’s 2-1 favourite has a poor record outside of the March to October period and trailed home 46 lengths back in third place. His record from November to February now reads 423243 (0-6), as compared to 19113312121 (6-11) in the warmer months.
OWER STARLIGHT (ninth, 1m handicap Lingfield, Wednesday, December 7th)
Jim Crowley’s obsession with getting the inside rail (rarely the place to be) cost him dear on the 11-5 favourite OWER STARLIGHT, who led up the inner after a furlong before settling back in fourth place. He was caught in a pocket approaching two out and got no sort of run. He finished with plenty in the tank and came out to win over the same course and distance on Monday. Richard Hannon’s colt has more improvement in him and might benefit from being gelded.
SMART BOYO (second, 2m handicap, Wolverhampton, Saturday, December 10th)
This Class 6 two-mile handicap was set up for the closers, with the winner, third and fourth coming from well off the pace. Runner-up SMART BOYO came from a mid-division sit and was probably in front soon enough. He can go one better next time.
