DEVIL’S ANGEL, 11th, 6f handicap, Haydock, Saturday, June 10th
DEVIL’S ANGEL beat only one home when 40-1 for the 6f Sky Bet Reverence Handicap but raced on the slowest part of the track and this run, only his second of the current campaign, would still have been needed. He’s won four times in July/August and will be interesting when he’s had another run or two.
GLORY CALL, eighth, 5.5f handicap, Wetherby, Tuesday, June 6th
GLORY CALL, like Tantalus and Lola’s Moment (see below), paid for racing up with the very strong pace in the 5.5f wetherbyracing.co.uk Handicap, weakening into eighth place. Backed from 20-1 into 14-1, Ollie Pears’ three-year-old can be forgiven this and last month’s handicap debut third at Newcastle suggests there’s a small race in him.
LADY LADE, fifth, 5f fillies’ handicap, Thirsk, Friday, June 9th
Sprint biases don’t come much stronger than Thirsk’s last Friday where low-drawn runners had little chance in the handicaps. The die was cast in the opening 5f Follow @thirskraces On Twitter Fillies’ Handicap in which Storm Fox (stall 7 of 8) led home runners drawn 6, 3 and 8. The one to take from the race was fifth-placed LADY LADE (stall 1), who ran to her draw in the early stages and never got anywhere near the favoured stands’ side rail. She’s a three-time winner over a stiff 5f – at Hamilton (twice) and Carlisle – and will be of interest when returned to such conditions.
LOLA’S MOMENT, seventh, 5.5f handicap, Wetherby, Tuesday, June 6th
LOLA’S MOMENT was only seventh of ten in the 5.5f handicap won by South Dakota Sioux but fared second best of those to race up with the pace behind Tantalus (see below). She’s now 0-9 but there was more promise in this effort than her finishing position suggests and there could be some value in backing her each-way next time.
MRS TRUMP, seventh, 6f handicap, Thirsk, Friday, June 9th
MRS TRUMP (stall 1 of 12) had a mountain to climb from the worst of the draw in the 6f weatherbysshop.co.uk Handicap and her 12-1 seventh – behind runners drawn 10, 9, 11, 12, 3 and 8 – can be upgraded. She’s yet to score after seven starts but only three of those have come for current trainer Paul Midgley and she also ran with credit in the other two, finishing a 50-1 fifth at Southwell in April on her return from six months off and a 25-1 fourth of 13 when drawn widest of all at Ripon.
READY FREDDIE GO, won, 5f handicap, Catterick, Saturday, June 10th
READY FREDDIE GO clocked a fast time when landing the 5f Class 4 Download The Vickers.Bet App Handicap from 10-11 favourite Live In The Moment. Well drawn in stall 1, Ollie Pears’ 13-2 shot scored with something up his sleeve, clearly relishing the fast conditions. Previously, I had him labelled as a Thirsk expert – he’s four from four at than venue on officially good or faster going – but his only other 5f Catterick run on a fast surface saw him finish second at 12-1 and he’s obviously at home at this venue too.
SOUL SEEKER, third, 5f apprentice handicap, Pontefract, Monday, June 12th
SOUL SEEKER went off too fast in the six-runner True Yorkshireman Training Series Apprentice Handicap, setting it up for 11-4 favourite Indian Sounds. He faded into a modest third but this effort is easily excused and he’ll be interesting in the 8.25 at Hamilton on Wednesday where Jason Watson is booked to ride.

TALAMANCA, fifth, 6f handicap, Thirsk, Friday, June 9th
Any doubts over the high-draw bias in the sprint handicaps at Thirsk last week were dispelled when Dear Daphne (stall 10 of 12) led home runners drawn 9, 11 and 12 in the 6f weatherbysshop.co.uk Handicap. Fifth-placed TALAMANCA (stall 3) was beaten by eight lengths but emerged best of those drawn in the bottom half of the field and can be supported next time.
TANTALUS, second, 5.5f handicap, Wetherby, Tuesday, June 6th
The 5.5f wetherbyracing.co.uk handicap saw Turbo Tiger go off at a lunatic gallop and set the race up for the closers, with the winner, third, fourth, fifth and sixth all coming from midfield or further back. Runner-up TANTALUS (‘prominent, went second over 1f out, pushed along to lead inside final furlong’), the 13-8 favourite, did too much too soon but finished well clear of the other prominent racers and can go one better next time.
WHITE WOLF, second, 1m2f handicap, Chelmsford, Thursday, June 8th
There was a strong gallop in the 1m2f Class 2 Weatherbys Digital Solutions Handicap, with Misty Dancer coming from the rear to score by a short head from the always-prominent WHITE WOLF. The third (‘held up in rear’) and fourth (‘took keen hold, held up in rear’) were also ridden patiently, suggesting that the runner-up’s effort was worthy of an upgrade. Saeed Bin Suroor’s four-year-old now has form figures on the all-weather in Britain of 112 (2-3), with both wins on Tapeta.
