ALEEZDANCER (fifth, 6f handicap, Goodwood, Saturday, August 5th)
I called the draw wrong in the Coral Stewards’ Cup and it was those berthed middle-to-high, not low, who dominated in the Coral Stewards’ Cup. ALEEZDANCER (stall 2 of 27) emerged best of the five runners to stay far side and Kevin Ryan’s mudlark can be supported when next encountering his preferred underfoot conditions.
BEECHWOOD STAR (third, 6f novice stakes, Newcastle, Thursday, August 3rd)
BEECHWOOD STAR was a big eyecatcher at Thirsk on his debut where he performed miracles to finish a two-length third after being carried left on leaving the stalls, running green and racing on the slowest part of the track. He was still green when a head second at Ayr 12 days later and Newcastle’s At The Races App Expert Tips Irish Stallions Farms EBF Restricted Novice Stakes looked an ideal opportunity for him to get off the mark. Sent off as the 5-6 favourite, despite a tricky draw in stall 1, he hit the front two furlongs out but was passed on either side, going down by a short head and a nose in third. He remains a horse of great potential but might need gelding before we see the best of him.
BEENHAM (sixth, 5f fillies’ conditions stakes, Goodwood, Wednesday, August 2nd)
The rush for the near side rail saw the front-runners go off too hard in the British EBF 40th Anniversary Alice Keppel Fillies’ Conditions Stakes at Goodwood last Wednesday, with the three who cut out the early running weakening to finish sixth, ninth and tenth of the 11 runners. BEENHAM, beaten by nine lengths into sixth, fared best of the trio and is one to side with next time.
COOPERATION (sixth, 6f handicap, Goodwood, Saturday, August 5th)
COOPERATION was one of only two to race on the near side rail in the Coral Stewards’ Sprint Handicaps, doing second best of the pair in a four-length sixth. This was a fair effort from an individual who is best coming late off a strong pace in a big field, and he should still have more to offer from his current handicap mark of 78.
FUNNY STORY (third, 6f fillies’ handicap, Goodwood, Tuesday, August 1st)
The near side rail was the place to be in the sprints on day one of Goodwood’s five-day meeting putting FUNNY STORY (stall 1 of 13) at a disadvantage in the 6f World Pool British EBF Fillies’ Handicap. Ralph Beckett’s three-year-old was switched left to race with the main pack before looming up on the outside of the field two furlongs out. She kept on well down the centre of the track but was still two lengths down at the line. This was a cracking effort in the circumstances (the winner/runner-were drawn 9 and 13) and she can be backed on her next assignment.
INBETWEENUS (fifth, 7f fillies’ maiden, Goodwood, Thursday, August 3rd)
Gay Kelleway’s newcomer INBETWEENUS attracted market support at big prices in the Tatler British EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes and ran a very encouraging fifth to Ornellaia. The daughter of Inns Of Court broke awkwardly and was settled in mid-pack on the inside rail by Saffie Osborne, running green when asked to make ground at halfway. The penny finally dropped but the principals had flown, and she had to settle for a 20-1 fifth of 13, just over seven lengths behind the winner. She’ll obviously improve for this and looks a winner in waiting.

MALANGEN (third, 3m handicap hurdle, Perth, Tuesday, August 1st)
MALANGEN travelled typically well in the Bet On This Race In Running With BetVictor Handicap Hurdle but Lisa Harrison’s eight-year-old failed to see out the 3m trip and weakened into third place, just over nine lengths behind winner Czech Her Out. He pulled 20 lengths clear of the fourth and will be of interest when dropped back to 2m4f.
PRINCESS CHIZARA (tenth, 5f fillies’ conditions stakes, Goodwood, Wednesday, August 2nd)
Conrad Allen’s PRINCESS CHIZARA could only finish tenth in the British EBF 40th Anniversary Alice Keppel Fillies’ Conditions Stakes at Goodwood last Wednesday but got into a three-way go for the early lead and was never going to last home. Her debut win came when making all in a small field on fast ground and similar conditions can see her bounce back.
SILENT WORDS (fourth, 6f fillies’ handicap, Goodwood, Tuesday, August 1st)
SILENT WORDS was poorly drawn in stall 4 of 13 in the 6f World Pool British EBF Fillies’ Handicap at Goodwood last Tuesday, racing ore towards the centre of the track when all the action was near side. Kevin Ryan’s 20-1 chance did well to grab fourth place, two and a half lengths behind winner Executive Decision, and can be supported next time.
ZIGGY’S DREAM (ninth, 5f fillies’ conditions stakes, Goodwood, Wednesday, August 2nd)
ZIGGY’S DREAM got into a fierce battle for the early lead in the 5f British EBF 40th Anniversary Alice Keppel Fillies’ Conditions Stakes at Goodwood last Wednesday and paid for those early exertions, fading into ninth place. This effort is safely ignored and the market could overreact next time.
