Appleby's Arrows - Newbury Specialist Aims for Thursday Double

Top trainer Charlie Appleby is enjoying an excellent season at Newbury, where his strike rate in 2022 is currently up at a very healthy 46%. In fact, backing Appleby’s horses blind here this year would have brought about a profit of +8.98 to level stakes. He has a pair of runners on Thursday’s Newbury card which we have scrutinised below, with both horses available to back via FansBet, who are offering a 200% Welcome Bonus Up To £200 for new customers.

MYSTERIOUS NIGHT – (2:10 Newbury, Watch Racing TV With Free Trial Now Novice Stakes)

The first of Charlie Appleby’s two runners on Newbury’s Thursday card is MYSTERIOUS NIGHT, a full brother to the yard’s dual US Grade 1 winner Althiqa.

This Dark Angel colt was sent off the even-money favourite for a 6f maiden here last month, where ultimately beaten just a nose into second by Richard Hannon’s front-running Dark Thirty.

Mysterious Night was in front merely yards after the line that day so certainly looked an unfortunate loser, and on that evidence, this extra half-furlong should be to his benefit.

The strength of that form hasn’t been severely tested, but the ninth and eleventh placed horses home have both won since which is promising. On RPR’s Mysterious Night comes out a clear best of the runners to have previously made the track, so should none of the debutantes turn out to be well above average then this should really be his race to lose.

LIGHT OF PEACE – (2:40 Newbury, racingtv.com/freetrial British EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes)

Charlie Appleby’s second Newbury runner comes on the card’s following 1m fillies’ novice stakes, where the equally unexposed LIGHT OF PEACE makes her second career start.

This filly is bred in the purple being by Dubawi out of Group 3 winner Majestic Queen, with her full sibling Maria Amalia a German Listed winner.

Slightly weak in the market (opened 10/11F) for a Newmarket maiden on debut in April, Light Of Peace was ultimately beaten a length and a half into third having gone off at an SP of 11/8F.

Green that day, particularly in the Newmarket dip, and likely unaided by making her challenge from out wide, natural improvement looks likely with that debut run under her belt. It was interesting to see Light Of Peace display quite a prominent knee action at Newmarket, which would suggest that she will be at home with ease in the ground, and this slightly more conventional track should also play to her strengths.

This does look on paper to be a straight shootout between her and the Juddmonte filly Whitebeam, who was a winner here last month. She must concede 6lb all round but obviously has the benefit of extra race/course experience.
