DOCTOR PARNASSUS (1.15 Taunton)
There was some amount of irony about DOCTOR PARNASSUS winning on his hurdles debut at Ascot last month.
Though he had shown ability on the flat for David O’Meara, he joined Dan Skelton for a jumps career without a victory on the level from ten attempts. That was despite having reached a peak official rating of 78 amid four second-placed finishes.
However, in what looked a decent four-year-old hurdle, he belied inexperience to win by ten lengths, setting himself up nicely for the rest of the season. Interestingly, he moves out of his own age group in this novice hurdle tomorrow.
He could yet make into a Cheltenham Festival contender in the Triumph Hurdle or Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle, but he will get 7lb and more from every other horse in the race and Dan Skelton is clearly keen on giving his charge a racing education here.

SLATE HOUSE (3.00 Taunton)
The former Grade 1 winner reached a peak mark of 156 in December 2019 after he won the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton.
That was SLATE HOUSE’s last victory though, with a combination of stable form and breaks off the track contributing to his sliding rating. Handicaps simply haven’t been for him so far.
However, there was sign of life on his most recent start, for the first time in nearly a year. After three runs back over hurdles yielded precious little, he was second to Killer Clown at Wincanton at the start of January.
He may simply have needed soft ground to be back to his best, as he had those conditions for the first time in six starts. He has also been dropped a further 2lb and there are no blots in the handicap up against him here.

GALLOPADE (4.45 Taunton)
Warren Greatrex has an excellent record with bumper horses in his career, operating at a 20% strike rate. That is superior to his 14% strike rate with horses over obstacles, while he would have made you a 42-point profit for a level stake on his bumper runners throughout his career.
GALLOPADE made the perfect start to his National Hunt career at Fakenham in November. He bolted up at Fakenham under 7lb claimer Caoilin Quinn, who barely had to use his upper body to cajole him clear in the closing stages.
The level of horses he beat may come under question, but the retention of Quinn will help negate the penalty he received for winning that contest. This race will likely offer up some sterner opposition, but it was a likeable debut and he could easily progress.

BOLD PLAN (1.00 Market Rasen)
BOLD PLAN is another who has drifted steadily down the rankings having promised significantly more as a novice.
In the colours of Evan Williams’ most loyal supporters, Mr and Mrs William Rucker, the eight-year-old has pulled off a pair of coups in his career. The first was in his novice hurdling days when claiming the scalp of Southfield Stone, while he also defeated The Big Breakaway at Exeter last season on his second start over fences.

Nevertheless, he is still easily young enough to regain some form and momentum. It is remarkable that he is now only rated 120 and Evan’s daughter Isobel will claim a further 3lb off his back.
