Brigadier Gerard Stakes - Runner-By-Runner Guide To Sandown's Evening Treat

The Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes is a rare evening treat for racing fans across the calendar. Thursday’s race looks a competitive renewal, and we’ve given our verdict below alongside 888sport‘s exclusive sign-up offer of Bet £10 and Claim £40 In Bet Bonuses.

Lord Glitters (David O’Meara, Daniel Tudhope) 16/1

Effervescent grey well into the veteran stage of his racing career now. Nine-year-old is still going strong after winning a Group 2 at Meydan in February, while he also won three times last year, including the Group 1 Jebel Hatta in Dubai. His international exploits have papered over one significant crack: he has failed to win in Britain since the 2019 Queen Anne at Royal Ascot. Maybe prefers middle distances to 1m now, but up against it at this stage of his career under biggest penalty in the field.

Mostahdaf (John & Thady Gosden, Jim Crowley) 5/4

Record is nearly immaculate, with six wins form seven starts. Only defeat came when extremely badly hampered in the St James’s Palace Stakes last season, especially as he had travelled into the race nicely. Impeccable form otherwise and now has two Listed wins and a pair of Group 3s to his name. Won the Gordon Richards Stakes over course and distance on return, doing so with the minimum of fuss. This will be tougher, but he is possibly still improving and may prove his quality here.

Addeybb (William Haggas, Tom Marquand) 3/1

Four-time Group 1 hero, who has a 50% strike rate throughout his career. Has excelled in Australia in the second half of his career, with three of his top tier victories coming down under. In all three he beat the brilliant mare Verry Elleegant, but also earned a belated Group 1 breakthrough in Britain when landing the 2020 Champion Stakes. Was not campaigned in Australia over the winter this time around and was well held in two starts on home turf last year. Nevertheless, this is a step down and holds no penalties, so still in the mix.

Bay Bridge (Sir Michael Stoute, Ryan Moore) 9/4

On a terrific run for Sir Michael Stoute, having won all four of his starts as a three-year-old in 2021. First three came in novice and handicap company, but the last of those was off a mark of 105, which firmly suggested he would be capable in Group races. Beat recent Goodwood winner Majestic Dawn in a Newmarket Listed event to end last season and Stoute’s runners always worth watching from four and upwards. Definitely in with a shout if he has progressed.

Dubai Future (Saeed Bin Suroor, Pat Cosgrave) 25/1

First of Godolphin pair, who cruised to success in a Listed race over 1m4f in Dubai in January. Below that form in three subsequent runs at Meydan and record in the UK not anything to shout about. Only won two of his eight starts and has generally performed better in warmer climes. Indeed, last win in Britain was in November 2019 in a Kempton novice event. Probably wants further than 1m2f too, so easy to pass over.

Passion And Glory (Saeed Bin Suroor, Dougie Costello) 33/1

Not quite as good as his stablemate in Dubai between January and March, but finished that spell with his best performance in the Dubai Gold Cup over 2m. However, form in Britain is more substantial than Dubai Future’s, so surprise he is a bigger price generally. Won three on the bounce last summer, including Goodwood’s Group 3 Glorious Stakes and also won an Ascot Listed event by six lengths over this trip of 1m2f. Also managed a third in Group 1 Grosser Preis Von Baden behind the Prix de l’Arc De Triomphe winner.

Verdict

It is tempting to chance the rank outsider in the field as Passion And Glory is far from out of this on his best form. However, MOSTAHDAF has a fantastic strike rate in his career so far and looked very promising when winning over course and distance last time. Addeybb is likely to be a big danger on his easiest assignment since 2020, while Bay Bridge is another potential improver.
