Nine runners were confirmed for the Champion Hurdle at midday including a supplementary entry for Tutti Quanti.
The picture of the Champion Hurdle’s runners has been warped throughout the season and may have another twist yet. State Man looked set to win last years renewal and held an obvious chance this year, prior to being ruled out through injury. The Constitution Hill decision to end his hurdling career came to fruition last week. Sir Gino looked to have a penalty kick after Kempton, but was ruled out after suffering a pelvic injury.
Lossiemouth has been confirmed, but her participation still remains far from certain with the Mares Hurdle still on the agenda. Speaking at the Tote Festival Preview, owner Rich Ricci said “I’m not sure her 2 miles is her best trip.”
A thread on the Tote’s X account stated Ricci said: “She worked very well last week. We are thinking trying something different, maybe headgear. It’s a wide open Champion Hurdle, her trip is 2m4f, we will see.”
The New Lion heads the market
Last year’s Turners winner The New Lion heads the market after his length success in the Unibet Hurdle. He proved he had the speed for two miles there and Skelton suggested that was merely a confidence booster. A strongly run Champion Hurdle will suit him, though he might still have something to prove jumping at speed.
Brighterdaysahead is out to correct her 19 lengths fourth to Golden Ace in last years renewal. She returned to form when beating Lossiemouth in the Irish Champion Hurdle, but she has to back that up here. She was met with defeat in the Dawn Run to Golden Ace, and while many have suggested her progeny don’t handle Cheltenham, Caldwell Potter but those fears to bed last season.
The reigning Champion Hurdle winner Golden Ace bids to go back to back after her fortunate nine-length victory last season. Her luck continued when winning the Fighting Fifth which saw both The New Lion and Constitution Hill fall. She was still a credible second to Sir Gino at Kempton, and cannot be discounted.
Triumph Hurdle winner Poniros made late headway on his seasonal return at Leopardstown, and has been steadily supported of late. He arrived late to beat Lulamba, and that experience of the hill can bode well.
William Hill Handicap Hurdle winner Tutti Quanti was supplemented at the six-day-declaration stage, though may need the ground soft.
Anzadam will have to improve on this season’s form to take this, as would Workahead. Kingwell winner Alexei was confirmed, with a quicker gallop reportedly going to suit better than the slow one at Wincanton.
