In a Glorious Goodwood in name and substance, Charlie Appleby earned five winners from just 13 runners at the meeting. All told, he has a 39% strike rate in the last fortnight and a 37% success percentage with his two-year-olds this term. Two more debutants arrive for the yard on Friday, and we have taken a look at the pair, along with an exclusive Unibet offer that provides up to £40 money back as a bonus, if your first racing bet loses.
CITY OF KINGS – 6:35 Newmarket
Unsurprisingly, the Godolphin juveniles are extremely well-bred. CITY OF KINGS not only has the pedigree, but was a 350,000gns purchase as a yearling as well. Expectations will be high.
He is a son of Kingman and Group 2-winning mare Horseplay. She ran in the Oaks and this is her first foal, so while there are no siblings for him to relate to, there is already plenty of ability on both sides of his family.
Kingman’s progeny have not hit enormous heights this season, but there is still reason to get excited: Godolphin’s own Noble Truth, another of his sons, won the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot recently over this trip of 7f which should prove ideal for this debutant.
Jack Mitchell takes the mount, which could mean he is the second choice. James Doyle is likely to have held sway in the absence of William Buick, but that might not ultimately count for very much.
It would be no surprise if City Of Kings turns into a top performer and many second choices have prevailed in these colours before. He will be one to keep a close eye on.
LOCAL DYNASTY – 6:35 Newmarket
Though LOCAL DYNASTY is the choice of James Doyle, a success for this colt would arguably testify more to the powers of Charlie Appleby than if City Of Kings were victorious.
Local Dynasty is still an immediate descendant of two fine individuals: champion sire and current leading sire in 2022 Dubawi, and Really Special, a Listed winner for fellow Godolphin handler Saeed bin Suroor in 2016. He would hardly be a surprising upstart were he to win.
However, his full sister Swift Spirit has not set the world alight in France so one suspects that Appleby has witnessed him flying on the gallops. Once again, this 7f trip should be fairly ideal form him to make his debut before challenging over 1m at a high level if he can.
Moreover, dam Really Special is a half-sister to a pair of Group 1 winners in Wild Illusion and Yibir, so there are close, successful relatives for Local Dynasty to emulate. A win here would simply set him on the right path.
