A superb field is set to line up for the 2024 Dante Stakes at York on Thursday, with seven declared on day two of the Dante Festival and we take a look at the potential Dante Stakes Runners. It’s one of the premier Epsom Derby trials and with that Classic only a few weeks away then the leading principles will be looking to enhance their reputations and head to Epsom as a leading Derby contender.
Charlie Appleby’s Ancient Wisdom is one of the star attractions in the Dante and having ended last season with Group wins in both the Autumn Stakes and Futurity Trophy, the Godolphin raider will look to kick off his campaign with a win. Available at double-figured odds for the Derby before his trip to York the son of Dubawi will be looking to make it five wins from six career starts.
One runner that will have his fitness on his side is Karl Burke’s Caviar Heights, who kicked off his season with a stunning four-length win in the Listed Newmarket Stakes at Newmarket and the son of Sea The Stars will be looking to make it two from two this season.
Second in the Royal Lodge Stakes on his last start last season, Roger Varian’s Al Musmak could make his seasonal reappearance, as the Night Of Thunder colt steps up in trip and runs beyond a mile for the first time.
Aidan O’Brien has trained the winner of the Dante Stakes on four occasions and while this may not be the favoured Derby trial of the Ballydoyle team he has to be respected when unleashing runners on the UK. He has an eye-catching runner in the shape of Cambridge, who steps up in trip after finishing fourth in the Craven before the 2000 Guineas.
Last of four in the Dee Stakes at Chester last weekend, where he missed the start badly, John & Thady Gosden’s God’s Window will make a quick turnaround on the Knavesmire, while the recent Newbury maiden winner Economics could make the huge step up in grade for William Haggas. War Rooms completes the line-up as he bids to get his career back on track having made such a promising start last season.
