Epsom Derby Favourites: A Look At The Leading Fancies For Classic Glory

City Of Troy – Aidan O’Brien

Hailed the next superstar of the turf when romping to emphatic victories both the Superlative Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes last season, CITY OF TROY was sent off a hot favourite for the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on his first run as a three-year-old. However, the son of Justify failed to sparkle at Flat HQ and was a well beaten ninth in the Classic event over a mile.

Not seen on the track since, Aidan O’Brien’s star is looking to bounce back in the Derby and despite that Newmarket disappointment he’s well-fancied to land Derby glory for the Ballydoyle team and he’s one of those towards the head of the betting.

Los Angeles – Aidan O’Brien

As is normally the case, Aidan O’Brien will often have multiple shots to fire at the Derby and while City Of Troy has a cloud hanging over him currently his stablemate LOS ANGELES continues to go from strength to strength and has been hugely popular in the Epsom Derby betting for the last few weeks.

Unbeaten in three career starts, Los Angeles staked his claim as a potential Derby contender when bounding to victory in the Group 3 Derby Trial Stakes at Leopardstown a few weeks ago and that has been a trial that has often thrown up future Derby winners. Not battling it out for favouritism with City Of Troy, at the time of writing, he is another class act at the forefront of the betting.

Ancient Wisdom – Charlie Appleby

A winner of the Group 3 Autumn Stakes and Group 1 Futurity Trophy at the back end of last season, ANCIENT WISDOM showed real talent as a two-year-old. Sent off favourite for the Dante Stakes at York on his comeback run, the Charlie Appleby-trained raider was well beaten by the impressive Economics, but with that contender not lining up on Saturday then the Godolphin charge has to be considered.

The Dubawi colt will need to improve for that run on the Knavesmire, but he’s one that should enjoy the step up to the mile-and-a-half here and he’s going to be one of the premier thorns in the side of the Ballydoyle battalion.

Ambiente Friendly – James Fanshawe

Fourth in the Listed Feilden Stakes back in April at Newmarket, AMBIENTE FRIENDLY improved immeasurably for his second start this season when storming to victory in the Lingfield Derby Trial, where he romped to a four-and-a-half length victory over Illinois, who could be another O’Brien runner this weekend in the Derby.

The quirky Gleneagles colt will need to build on that Listed win, but he showed tremendous ability that day and James Fanshawe’s charge certainly may not have reached his ceiling yet and is another well-fancied contender
